GWU Grapplers Drop Final Dual Match of the Season to UNC Greensboro, 37-6

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb picked up wins at 141 and 157, yet suffered three pin fall wins and a technical fall win in a 37-6 loss to UNC Greensboro on Tuesday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.
After falling behind 9-0 early with losses at 125 and 133 to start the match, redshirt-sophomore Richie Spicel used a one-point escape in the first period and a two-point takedown in the second to come away with a 3-1 win over Michael Crowley at 141 and get GWU on the board.
At 157, redshirt-sophomore Alex Medved took an early 4-2 lead in the first period before picking up a two-point reversal and a one-point escape in the second period to pull out to a 7-4 lead. Medved then used a two-point take down in the third en route to holding off Justin Rice for a 9-5 win, cutting the UNC Greensboro match lead to nine at 15-6.
GWU redshirt-sophomore Justin Guthrie used a two point takedown in the early stages of the third period to tie the score up at 6-6 before the Spartan's Brett Miller tallied a one point escape to earn a 7-6 win at 165 and push UNC Greensboro out in front by 12 at 18-6.
Down 22-6 in the match, redshirt-senior Jonathan Velazquez took an early 2-0 advantage in the first period, yet ultimately fell to Elijah Adams 5-4 at 184 in his final home match.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would drop the final two bouts of the day to suffer a 37-6 match defeat to the Spartans.
Gardner-Webb (6-15-1) will now set its sights for the 2011 NCAA East Regional Championships which will be held on Sunday, March 6th, at 2:30 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
