Runnin' Bulldogs Split With Providence and Cleveland State on Saturday at Winthrop/Adidas Invitational

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb softball team posted a 3-1 win over Providence and suffered a 3-1 loss to Cleveland State on Saturday, March 12th, on day two of the 2011 Winthrop/Adidas Invitational hosted by Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

The win puts GWU at 5-11 overall on the season.

Game 1: Gardner-Webb 3, Providence 1

The Runnin' Bulldogs overcame an early deficit to defeat the Providence Friars 3-1 in its first game of the day on Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C.

Providence scored in the first innings, as Stratton reached base safely and advanced to second on back-to-back GWU errors before scoring later on in the inning on a Bryant RBI single to center field.

Down 1-0, Gardner-Webb got on the board in the third, as Rachel Jablonski reached base on a Friar error. After Melinda Dulkowski sacrificed Jablonski over in scoring position, Samantha Meenaghan ripped an RBI single to tie the score up at 1-1.

In the fourth, catcher McKenzie Morenus blasted a solo home run, her first of the season, to put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 2-1.

Gardner-Webb added an insurance run in the seventh by way of a Jordyn Arrowood RBI single en route to a 3-1.

Redshirt-junior Cindy Boomhower (3-6) picked up the win, allowing only one unearned run on four hits, while striking out three in four innings of work.

Freshman Jessica Childers (2) tallied her second save of the season holding the Friars scoreless over the final three innings of play.

Offensively, Meenaghan was 3-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, while Morenus was 2-3 with a solo home run and Jablonski was 2-3 with two runs scored.

Game 2: Cleveland State 3, Gardner-Webb 1

The Runnin' Bulldogs surrendered a run in each of the fifth and the sixth innings to fall to the Vikings of Cleveland State 3-1 on Saturday night in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, as Sito hit a two out solo home run of the center field fence to put the visiting team up early.

Gardner-Webb knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the third, as Meenaghan singled to left center with two outs, to plate Dulkowski and put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board.

In the fourth, GWU threatened to take the lead, as Morenus belted a one out double to left field, only to be stranded at second with the next two hitters making outs.

Cleveland State took advantage, as Bate lead off the top of the fifth with a single to third. After being moved up to second and a pop out, Nagy then singled to right center to score Bate and put the Vikings back in front at 2-1.

GWU's Jane Savage led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to left and was moved up to second by a Jablonski sacrifice, yet would get no further as the Vikings held on to a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth.

In the sixth, Cleveland State added an insurance run on a Powell RBI single to take a 3-1 lead.

Down two, GWU went down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to fall to the Vikings 3-1.

Childers (2-5) picked up the loss, as the newcomer allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out one in five innings of work.

Bate (1-1) picked up the win for the Vikings, holding the Runnin' Bulldogs to one run on four hits over four innings of action.

At the plate, Dulkowski was 1-2 with a run scored, while Morenus was 1-3 with a double. Sophomore Jordyn Arrowood was 1-3 with a triple, while Meenaghan was 1-3 with an RBI.

For Cleveland State, Sito was 1-3 with a home run, one RBI and a run scored, while Nagy was 2-4 with an RBI.

Gardner-Webb (5-11) will return to action tomorrow morning, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will face off with UNC Wilmington at 11 a.m. and George Washington at 1 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C.
