Runnin' Bulldogs Earn 4-3 Win over N.C. Central Saturday Afternoon

CARY, N.C. - Having to default one doubles and one singles match due to injuries, the shorthanded Gardner-Webb women's tennis team fought hard to bring home a 4-3 victory over N.C. Central Saturday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
In doubles play, the duo of Laura Kriett and Rita Gouveia defeated Fredrica Larsson-Lombard and Maria Nedstrom (8-5) at the No. 2 position, yet the Eagles won at the No. 1 position, and earned the win by default at the No. 3 position to claim the point.
N.C. Central earned another point immediately at the beginning of singles play at the No. 6 position due to GWU only having five active players to take a 2-0 advantage, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs fought back.
Ioana Oprea defeated Oleysa Palko (5-7, 6-3, 6-1) at the No. 1 position, Jenny Lunde defeated Fredrica Larsson-Lombard (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) at the No. 3 position, Rita Gouveia defeated Kelly Chaparro (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 4 position, and Tavenner Black defeated Tatiana Velasquez (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 5 position to give Gardner-Webb four victories in the five singles matches to earn the overall victory.
Saturday's win improved GWU's overall record to 6-3, continuing the squad's best start to a season since becoming a NCAA Division I member in 2000.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action this Tuesday afternoon as they host Campbell. The match is set for a 2:00 PM start time at the Webb Tennis Complex.
