Three School Records Fall at 49er Classic

Charlotte, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb outdoor track & field teams saw three Gardner-Webb school records fall this weekend, as senior Diana Palka, redshirt-senior Christoph Hutschalik and sophomore Josiah Stanton-Brooks set new school records to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
Palka, who held the record at the 3000 meter steeplechase, reset both her and GWU's record in the event this weekend, turning in a time of 11:32.71, placing seventh-place overall in the event.
Hutschalik, who holds the best mark in both the Big South Conference and in the East Region in the hammer throw, reset his record and GWU school record with a mark of 61.08 meters, placing second overall in the event.
GWU's Stanton-Brooks posted a new school record in the 1500 meter run, crossing the finish line in ninth-place overall with his new GWU school best time of 3:56.44.
On the women's side, Gardner-Webb's Ann Marie Howell and Carrie Long each tied for first-place overall in the pole vault event with identical heights of 3.50 meters, while sophomore Taylor Cook finished in a fourth-place tie with 3.35 meters and Bethany Wright placed in a tie for ninth with her mark of 3.05 meters.
In the shot put event, sophomore Ashlei Alexander took second-place with a throw of 13.54 meters, a Big South Conference best, while Yazzming Lee and Kathryn Spiro placed 19th and 25th overall with marks of 11.12 meters and 10.00 meters, respectively.
Junior Sarah Herd picked up a fourth-place finish in the women's high jump event, clearing the bar at 1.60 meters, while freshman Olivia Moody turned in a mark of 1.50 meters to place in a tie at 13th-place.
In the javelin throw event, Howell and Caroline Arledge finished back-to-back at 10th and 11th-place, respectively, with throws of 35.88 meters and 35.55 meters, while freshman Kristen Hurley placed 21st overall with a distance of 28.43 meters.
Gardner-Webb freshman Jasmine Miles recorded an 11th-place showing in the hammer throw with a mark of 41.01 meters and a 13th-place finish in the discus throw with a toss of 38.18 meters, while Lee placed 16th overall in the hammer throw event with a distance of 39.25 meters.
Senior Laura Scott crossed the finish line in 16th-place in the 5000 meter run with her time of 18:35.44, while sophomore Ivana Hughes posted a 17th-place finish in the 800 meter run with her time of 2:19.80.
On the men's side this weekend, sophomore Clint McManus recorded a third-place finish in the pole vault event, clearing the bar at 4.45 meters, while fellow classmate Stephen Gardner finished 14th with a height of 3.95 meters.
Senior Johnathan Rucker turned in a fourth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.58 and a ninth-place showing in the 110 meter hurdles with his time of 14.84, while sophomore Bo Miller crossed the finish line in seventh-place overall in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.86.
The GWU 4x100 meter relay unit of Lyndrez Leslie, Miller, Tyson Petty and Richard Jules crossed the finish line in sixth-place with their time of 42.93, while the team of Terry Davis, Galen Keene, Jules and Trey Crook turned in a time of 3:24.90 to place in 10th-place overall in the 4x400 meter relay.
Freshman Johnathan Parks and senior Evan Brusich each posted top-25 finishes in both the 110 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles events, while freshman Mike McClay turned in a time of 15:03.16 in the 5000 meter run, good enough to place him in seventh-place overall.
GWU's Davis recorded an 11th-place finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.83 meters, and a 13th-place showing in the triple jump event with a mark of 13.17 meters, finishing ahead of fellow Runnin' Bulldog Tavarus Ferguson, who finished in 23rd-place with his mark of 12.24 meters.
Thrower Travis Rogers took 12th in the hammer throw with a distance of 47.39 meters and an 18th-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.80 meters, while freshman Carson Sears recorded a 13th-place finish with a mark of the 46.62 meters in the hammer throw and a 17th-place finish in the discus throw with a toss of 43.09 meters.
While Hutschalik set a school record and took a second-place in the hammer throw event with his mark of 61.08 meters, the redshirt-senior finished behind Gardner-Webb Track & Field Assistant Coach Andy Fryman, who took first-place with his mark of 71.18 meters.
Gardner-Webb's outdoor track & field team will return to competition next weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Asics Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. on March 24-26th.
