
GWU Softball To Host Five Big South Games This Week; To Hold Senior Day on Saturday Afternoon

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldog softball team will host five Big South Conference games this week, taking on Winthrop in a twin bill on Wednesday at 2 p.m. and then hosting the Liberty Lady Flames in a three-game conference series over the weekend with two games on Friday starting at 2 p.m. and a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
GWU will host Senior Day on Saturday, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will recognize Kelsey Witter prior to the first pitch at 1 p.m.
Gardner-Webb is on a two-game winning streak, both of which were 3-2 conference wins at home.
Freshman lead-off hitter Samantha Meenaghan and redshirt-freshman Morgan Baker lead the way offensively for GWU, as Meenaghan is hitting a team-high .337 with a team-high 16 runs scored, while Baker his posting a .326 batting average with a team-high 15 RBIs and three home runs.
Freshman hurler Jessica Childers is continuing her winning ways, as she has posted back-to-back 3-2 complete game wins over her last two outings, both of which came in conference play.
The Winthrop Eagles are 12-24 overall and 2-6 in the Big South after having dropped two of three games at Coastal Carolina last weekend. However, Winthrop is 4-4 in true road contests this season and will look to get back on the winning track this Wednesday.
Leading the way offensively for the Lady Eagles is Chelsey Schoenfeldt, who is hitting a team-high .378 with 22 RBIs and four home runs, while Brittany Stoudemire is hitting .343 with 20 RBIs and three home runs. In the circle, Winthrop has struggled this season, as Schoenfeldt leads the team with a 6-6 overall record and an ERA of 3.41 in 88.1 innings pitched. Natalie Becker and Ashleigh Jackson have also seen time in the circle for Winthrop, both posting 3-8 records thus far this season.
After dropping three straight games two weeks ago, Liberty bounced back to win its last two games at home over Charleston Southern last weekend to take a 2-1 overall series win. Liberty is 14-17 overall and 5-3 thus far this season in conference play heading into a week in which the Lady Flames will take on James Madison in a non-conference double-header on Wednesday before traveling down to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a weekend conference series at Gardner-Webb.
Kelly Strickland and Keely McMillon have led Liberty, who is 3-4 in true road contests heading into play this week, this season. Strickland, who has played in every game this season, is hitting .371 with eight home runs, three doubles and 23 RBIs, while McMillon, who has played in only 22 games, is hitting .412 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. Katrina Johnson is 9-5 in the circle for Liberty this season, as she has posted a 2.45 ERA over 102.2 innings, while Tiffani Smith, last year's Big South Pitcher of the Year, is only 4-9 with an ERA of 4.66 on the year.
