GWU Women's Golf Takes Second at 2011 Big South Women's Golf Championships; Hellyer and Smith Earn All-Conference Honors

Ninety-Six, S.C. - Gardner-Webb sophomores Hannah Hellyer and Lauren Smith both posted top-six finishes for the event to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a second-place team finish with a score of 930, +66, at the 2011 Big South Women's Golf Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs carded team rounds of 316, 306 and 308 to finish the three-day tournament with a score of 930, +66, 18 strokes behind first-place finisher Coastal Carolina who carded a tournament low round of 299 on Wednesday to win the championship with a combined team score of 912, +48.
GWU's sophomore Hannah Hellyer, who entered play on Wednesday in first-place overall, shot a third round 77, +5, on Wednesday to finish tied for second-place overall with a combined tournament score of 226, +10. The second-place finish paced the Runnin' Bulldogs and earned All-Conference honors for Hellyer.
Joining Hellyer on the All-Conference Team was fellow sophomore Lauren Smith, who carded a third round score of 76, +4, to finish the three-day championship event in a tie for sixth-place overall with a combined score of 232, +16.
Also finishing in the top-10 was sophomore Sammy Vass, as the sophomore transfer turned in a round of 77, +5, on Wednesday to finish in 10th-place overall with a combined score of 234, +18.
Rounding out the scoring for GWU was sophomore Meghan Allum who carded a third round 77, +5, as well, to finish the tournament in a tie for 16th-place with a combined score of 239, +23.
Gardner-Webb's fifth player, senior Courtney Meyer, an All-Academic Team selection, was forced to withdraw from the tournament on Tuesday due to an illness.
The Runnin' Bulldogs finished 19 strokes ahead of the third-place Bucknell Lady Bison (949, +85) and 23 strokes in front of High Point (953, +89) who took fourth-place.
