Ninety-Six, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's golf
team turned in a combined team score of 303, +15, on Wednesday, to
finish with a final tournament team score of 887, +23, to hold on
for second-place overall in the team standings at the 2011 Big
South Men's Golf Championship hosted by Radford at The Patriot Golf
Club in Ninety-Six, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs struggled on Wednesday, carding its worst
round of the three-round event with a combined team score of 303,
+15. However, after shooting a 299 on day one and a 285 on day
two, the Runnin' Bulldogs finished with a three-day combined team
score of 887, +23, good enough for second-place overall.
Sophomore Daniel
Kim's strong played continued on Wednesday, as he carded three
birdies on the front nine en route to a 72, even par, score for the
day. His third round 72 gave Kim a combined three-round score of
214, -2, to place him in a tie for third-place overall and allowed
him to earn Big South All-Conference honors.
Kim led the tournament with a par-3 scoring average of 3.00 even
par and was fourth in par-4 scoring with a 3.97, -1, average. The
sophomore was also second in the tournament field with 12
birdies.
The Runnin' Bulldogs J.J.
Regan, who had paced Gardner-Webb over the first two days of
play, posted a third and final round score of 79, +7. With his
rounds of 72, 68 and 79, Regan finished in sixth-place with a
combined score of 219, +3, to also earn all-conference
recognition.
Regan, who posted an eagle on day one, had nine birdies for the
tournament and turned in a par-5 scoring average of 4.92, -1, for
the three-day event.
GWU's Kristopher
Gray, which carded a 74, +2, on Tuesday, shot a third round 75,
+3, on Wednesday to finish tied for 20th-place overall with a
combined tournament score of 226, +10.
Gray finished the tournament with a GWU best 34 pars and a par-5
scoring average of 4.67, -4, for the event.
Senior Scott
Wheeler finished out is four-year career at Gardner-Webb with a
third round 83, +11, on Wednesday, giving him a final tournament
combined score of 235, +19, to place in 36th-place overall, while
freshman Steven
Jones wrapped up his first year as a Runnin' Bulldog with his
best round of the tournament, a 77, +5, on Wednesday to finish the
three-day event with a combined score of 240, +24, and in
39th-place.
Gardner-Webb's 887, +23, was 30 strokes behind first-place
finisher in the Liberty Flames who finished the tournament with a
combined team score of 857, -7. However, GWU finished one stroke
ahead of both Coastal Carolina (888, +24) and Winthrop (888, +24),
who tied for third-place overall, and five shots ahead of Radford
(892, +28) who placed fifth.
