GWU's Hutschalik, Long and Sears Earn Big South Honors, as Runnin' Bulldogs Take Fifth and Seventh Overall at the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Lexington, Va. - Gardner-Webb's Christoph Hutschalik and Carrie Long were both tabbed the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while freshman thrower Carson Sears was named the 2011 Big South Men's Freshman of the Year, as the women's team placed fifth overall with 77.5 points and the men's team finished in seventh with 76 points at the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by VMI in Lexington, Va.
Both Hutschalik and Long were both named the 2011 Big South Scholar-Athletes for Indoor Track & Field early this season, while Sears earned all-conference honors in both the hammer throw and the discus throw events.
The third and final day of competition was highlighted by three all-conference performances in Johnathan Rucker, Clint McManus and Sears on the men's side, while on the women's side GWU turned in four personal best records over two different events.
On the men's side, Rucker earned all-conference honors with his second-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles, as he crossed the finish line with a new GWU school record time of 14.40.
GWU's McManus took second-place in the men's pole vault event with a new personal best mark of 4.60 meters, earning him all-conference recognition, while Sears picked up all-conference honors once again, this time in the discus throw with a new personal best distance of 46.60 meters (152'11").
Freshman Johnathan Parks just missed out on a top-three finish in the 400 meter hurdle finals event, picking up a fourth-place finish with a time of 54.87, while senior Evan Brusich recorded an eighth-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.39.
Brusich also earned a fifth-place finish in the pole vault event, finishing just ahead of fellow teammate Steven Gardner who took sixth-place overall, as both cleared the bar with a height of 4.15 meters, while in the 800 meter finals, sophomore Josiah Stanton-Brooks picked up an eighth-place finish with his time of 2:02.50.
In the 5000 meter run, three Runnin' Bulldogs competed, as freshman Mike McClay picked up a sixth-place finish with his time of 15:21.96. Fellow GWU runners Justin Loy and Justin Cole crossed the finish line in 24th and 25th-place with respective times of 17:28.94 and 17:59.18.
Freshman Terry Davis finished 11th overall in the men's triple jump event with a mark of 13.72 meters (45'0.25"), while in the men's discus throw Andy Scates recorded a 21st-place showing with a throw of 33.48 meters (109'10").
In the relay events, the Runnin' Bulldogs unit of Rucker, Davis, Parks and Stanton-Brooks turned in a time of 3:19.41 in the 4x400 meter relay, good enough for fourth-place overall, while the team of Parks, Bo Miller, Richard Jules and Tyson Petty turned in a sixth-place finish in the 4x100 meter relay event with their time of 42.95.
On the women's side of competition on day three, sophomore Ivana Hughes recorded a fourth-place finish in the 800 meter run finals with a new personal best time of 2:15.31, while freshman thrower Jasmine Miles earned a fifth-place finish in the discus throw with a finals mark of 40.25 meters (132'01"), a new personal record mark.
Fellow throwers Tabitha Hamilton, Ashlei Alexander and Kyntoya Hansford finished 10th, 11th and 13th overall in the discus throw for GWU, as Hamilton posted a mark of 36.24 meters (118'11"). Alexander recorded a throw of 36.06 meters (118'04") and Hansford posted a mark of 35.60 meters (116'09"), both new personal best marks.
In the 5000 meter run, senior Diana Palka placed 14th overall with her time of 18:47.24, while fellow classmate Laura Scott turned in a 16th-place finish with her time of 19:19.47.
In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of T'Keyah Bell, Amara Isbell, Cherish Richardson and Hughes crossed the finish line with a time of 3:55.03, good enough for fifth-place overall, while in the 4x100 meter relay, the unit of Katherine Milton, Isbell, Nancy Cates and Bell recorded a sixth-place finish with their time of 49.15.
Both the men's and women's track & field teams will return to action in two weeks, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday, May 6th.
