GWU Posts Six Individual Wins on Friday at the Carolina's Cup

Rock Hill, S.C. - Gardner-Webb's outdoor track & field team's posted a number of strong showings on Friday, as the women's team earned a first-place team finish with 153 points, while the men's team placed fourth with 99 points at the Carolina's Cup hosted by Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.
On the women's side, senior Diana Palka earned a first-place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase event, crossing the finish line in a GWU school record time of 11:20.46, while junior Ann Marie Howell tied the school record with her first-place mark of 3.75 meters in the pole vault event and also picked up a first-place finish in the javelin throw event with a mark of 34.65 meters.
Sophomore thrower Ashlei Alexander recorded a first-place finish in the shot put event with a distance of 12.79 meters and also picked up a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw event with a mark of 42.14 meters.
Freshman Jasmine Miles tallied a second-place finish in the hammer throw event with a personal best mark of 45.16 meters, while senior Caroline Arledge placed second in the javelin throw with a distance of 34.24 meters, finishing just ahead of both Olivia Moody (25.74 meters) and Katie Spiro (21.12 meters) who placed fifth and seventh, respectively.
Fellow GWU throwers Kyntoya Hansford and Yazzming Lee also recorded two top-10 finishes for the meet, as Hansford took second in the discus throw with a personal best mark (34.65 meters) and fifth in the shot put (10.75 meters), while Lee placed fifth in the hammer throw with a personal best distance (41.02 meters) and sixth in the shot put (10.70 meters).
Junior Elisabeth Sawyer picked up a second-place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase with her personal best time of 11:36.64, while sophomore Ariel Zimmerman took second-place in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:59.71 and fifth in the 800 meter run with her time of 2:23.48, finishing behind fellow teammate Cherish Richardson who took third overall with a personal best time of 2:20.43.
In the women's pole vault event, which was won by Howell, Gardner-Webb sophomore's Taylor Cook and Bethany Wright placed fourth and sixth, respectively, with heights of 3.40 meters and 3.15 meters, while in the long jump event, junior Katy Milton set a new personal best mark of 5.05 meters to place fifth overall, putting her just ahead of teammate Kristen Hurley who also set a personal record with her leap of 4.95 meters, good enough for sixth-place.
Sophomore Ivana Hughes crossed the finish line in fifth in the 400 meter dash with her time of 57.45, while freshman Ashley Slate, who took 12th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.61, placed 11th in the 400 meter dash with her time of 1:06.67.
Hurley and fellow newcomer Nancy Cates both set personal best marks on Friday, as Hurley took seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with her time of 15.70, while Cates placed eighth in the 100 meter dash with her time of 12.91.
In the relay events, the team of Milton, Hurley, Cates and T'Keyah Bell crossed the finish line in third-place overall in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 49.13, while the unit of Bell, Amara Isbell, Spiro and Hughes picked up a third-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with their time of 3:59.28.
On the men's side, Gardner-Webb posted a handful of top-10 finishes, but only two first-place finishes, as Clint McManus took first-place in the pole vault event, clearing the bar at 4.30 meters and Josiah Stanton-Brooks placed first overall in the 800 meter run with a new personal best time of 1:52.21.
Fellow distance runner Mike McClay recorded a second-place finish in the 1500 meter run with his time of 4:05.62, while fellow newcomer Trey Crook finished in eighth-place overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:59.99, a new personal record.
Earning a third-place finish in the 100 meter dash was sophomore Bo Miller with his time of 10.83, while senior Evan Brusich placed third in the 110 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.71 and fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.32.
Fellow sprinter Johnathan Parks picked up a fourth-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 15.08, while Tyson Petty (11.27) and Tavarus Ferguson (11.68) placed eighth and 10th, respectively, in the 100 meter dash even on Friday.
In the 200 meter dash, GWU freshman Galen Keene crossed the finish line in ninth with his time of 23.44, a new personal best, placing him just in front of fellow teammate Marquise Joyce who placed 10th with his time of 23.49. Keene also earned a sixth-place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.39.
Freshmen Jarrett Willis (11:11.09) and Drew Ford (11:16.83) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 3000 meter steeplechase event, while Ferguson (6.27 meters) and Cory Palmer (5.92 meters) took seventh and eighth, respectively, in the long jump event.
GWU thrower Carson Sears recorded three top-10 finishes on Friday, placing second in the hammer throw with a personal best mark (54.82 meters), third in the discus throw (42.77 meters) and sixth in the shot put (14.15 meters).
Junior Travis Rogers picked up a third-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 14.73 meters and a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw event with a distance of 49.08 meters, both personal best marks, while C.J. Wise placed third in the javelin throw with a toss of 48.30 meters and fifth in the hammer throw with a throw of 45.69 meters, also both personal records.
Fellow throwers Andy Scates, Josh Padgett and Joseph Urquhart all had top-10 finishes on Friday, as Scates took seventh with a personal best mark of 33.74 meters in the discus throw, while Padgett placed sixth in the javelin throw with a personal record (43.09 meters) and 10th in the hammer throw (36.60 meters). Urquhart recorded an eighth-place finish in the discus throw (31.25 meters) and ninth in the shot put (11.80 meters).
In the relay events, Gardner-Webb's team of Brusich, Parks, Terry Davis and Stanton-Brooks placed third in the 4x400 meter relay with their time of 3:21.86, while the unit of Parks, Miller, Joyce and Petty crossed the finish line in fourth with a time of 42.54 in the 4x100 meter relay.
The Gardner-Webb outdoor track & field teams will look to continue its strong performances next weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. on April 13-16th.
