May 02, 2011 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE - Gardner-Webb slugger Dusty Quattlebaum was named Big
South Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season
on Monday, continuing a strong season at the plate.
Quattlebaum (Boiling Springs, N.C. / Crest HS) batted .400
(8-for-20) with nine RBI in four road wins for the Runnin' Bulldogs
(28-13-1, 12-9 Big South). He also had four doubles, three runs
scored, a .400 on-base percentage and a .600 slugging percentage.
He
opened his week with a double and run scored in GWU's 3-2 win at
Furman, before batting .438 (7-16) in the Runnin' Bulldogs'
three-game sweep of Radford. Quattlebaum went 4-for-6 with three
RBI in the series opener - including a two-run double with two outs
in the top of the ninth that pushed Gardner-Webb to the eventual
11-10 victory. In the second game of the series, he delivered a
two-run, two-out double in the top of the seventh that provided the
winning runs in the 5-4 win.
Quattlebaum followed with four RBI in Sunday's finale - including a
three-run double in the third inning that put Gardner-Webb ahead
for good. He finished Sunday's game 2-for-5 at the plate. The nine
RBI on the week tied an earlier effort for the redshirt junior in
March over a four-game stretch.
His
four doubles pushed Quattlebaum to second nationally in that
category. He currently has 23 two-baggers to go with a team-high
.375 batting average. He is one of three players with at least 40
RBI, driving in 41 so far in 2011.
Quattlebaum's production lifted Gardner-Webb to third in the Big
South Conference standings, and extended the nation's third-longest
active win streak to eight games. The Runnin' Bulldogs lead the Big
South in nine major offensive categories, and rank No. 6 nationally
in team batting (.323), No. 8 nationally in runs per game (8.0),
No. 8 in hits (492) and No. 8 in RBI (302).
Gardner-Webb begins its most difficult stretch of the season on
Tuesday, however, traveling to face No. 17 North Carolina at 4:00
pm in Chapel Hill, then heading to Clemson, S.C., to begin a
three-game set against the No. 21 Tigers.
The
Tigers and Runnin' Bulldogs will play a doubleheader on Saturday,
May 7, in Clemson - then will play a single game in Boiling
Springs, N.C., on Sunday, May 8 (2:00 pm).
The
Runnin' Bulldogs are 11-5-1 away from home in 2011, which ranks as
the nation's eighth-best mark on the road among NCAA Division I
programs.
