
GWU Signee Matt Yelverton Finishes in a Tie for 16th-Place at the 97th Carolinas Amateur Championships

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Gardner-Webb signee Matt Yelverton shot a combined four round score of 290, +2, to finish in a three-way tie for 16th-place overall at the 97th Carolinas Amateur Championships of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by the Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Yelverton, an incoming freshman from Matthews, N.C., carded a first round 70, -2 under par on Thursday, to head into Friday's round of play in a five-way tied for fourth-place.
On Friday, day two of the event, Yelverton turned in another strong round of 70, -2 under par, to move up to second-place overall with a two-round combined score of 140, -4 under par. Yelverton was only one stroke out of first-place heading into the final two rounds of play.
Over the final two rounds on Saturday and Sunday, Yelverton posted back-to-back rounds of 75, +3, to finish the four-day event with a combined score of 290, +2, nine strokes behind the winner Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C.
Defending champion Logan Harrell of Huntersville, N.C. shot a final round 73, +1, on Sunday to finish tied for 16th-place overall at 290, +3, as well.
With his top-30 finish, Yelverton is exempt into the 2012 Carolinas Amateur Championship that will be held at the Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. next summer.
The Carolinas Amateur was founded by the Carolinas Golf Association and first conducted in 1910 at Sans Souci Country Club in Greenville, S.C. The club later changed its name to Greenville Country Club.
The Carolinas Amateur is one of 35 major championships and 176 other golfing events conducted by the CGA. The CGA is in its 102nd year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas.
