Boiling Springs, N.C. - GWU used three first-half goals and solid defense throughout its season opener to shut out the visiting USC Upstate Spartans 3-0 Sunday night in a game shortened due to lightning.
Runnin' Bulldog senior Dawn Rollyson scored the first two goals of the match to put the home team on top. Rollyson scored first in the 25th minute on a ball misplayed by the Spartans' keeper, guiding the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to give GWU a 1-0 lead.
The senior struck again in the 39th minute on a chip shot played over the head of the Spartans' keeper, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Katie Soles scored her first career goal as a Runnin' Bulldog in the 42nd minute off a long assist by GWU keeper Erika Lenns, striking a ball from 22 yards that slid through the hands of the Upstate keeper.
Lenns and the rest of the GWU defense maintained the lead in the second half, limiting the visiting team to five shots for the game. The GWU keeper Lenns got the win, recording 70 minutes in goal.
The match was called in the 70th minute due to lightning in the area.
GWU will next be in action Sun. Aug. 28, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will take to the road to visit the Mocs of Chattanooga. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
