August 29, 2011 | Women's Soccer
Chattanooga, Tenn. - Gardner-Webb used three goals and a relentless offensive attack to play Chattanooga to a 3-3 double overtime draw Sunday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped on top in the 8th minute on a Megan Curan penalty kick after a Chattanooga foul. The goal put Gardner-Webb up 1-0 and marked the GWU freshman's first goal as a Runnin' Bulldog.
Chattanooga countered with two unanswered goals in the first half. The Mocs' Crystal Mackezyk evened the score 1-1 in the 26th minute, taking a Kelly Crew throw in and scoring from the top of the 18 yard box. The Mocs scored again in the 28th minute when a shot by Lauren Wilson deflected off a GWU defender and into the goal for a 2-0 Chattanooga advantage.
Gardner-Webb freshman Megan Curan struck back in the 35th minute, heading in her second goal off a Stephanie Benshoof corner kick to even the score at 2-2 heading into halftime.
The Mocs used an early second half goal to jump on top 3-2, scoring on a free kick in the 47th minute off the foot of Becca Smith.
GWU sophomore Ele Margelos provided the equalizer in the 59th minute, taking a Megan Reimer pass, pulling the Moc keeper out of the goal, and trickling the ball into the goal to tie the score at 3-3.
The defenses tightened up the rest of the game, as both teams held the other scoreless for the remainder of the second half as well as both 10 minute overtime periods.
GWU keeper Erika Lenns got the tie for the Runnin' Bulldogs, providing three key saves in what was another competitive affair between Gardner-Webb and Chattanooga. Sunday's tie marked the third different outcome in as many years in matches between GWU and Chattanooga, with the Runnin' Bulldogs taking the win in 2010 and the Mocs prevailing in 2009.
GWU will return to action Friday, September 2, staying on the road to face the Eagles of Morehead State in Morehead, Kent. in a game slated to begin at 7 p.m.
