
GWU Men's Tennis Competes at UNC-Greensboro Invitational

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team took to the courts this weekend Friday, Sep. 9 - Sunday, Sep. 11 in their 2011 season opener at the UNC-Greensboro Invitational.
Junior Adam Knutsson-Sunblad was victorious in the round of 16 in Men's A1 Singles action, taking the three set match over Liberty's Shae Thomas 7-6(4); 3-6; 6-1 before falling to in the quarterfinals UNC-G's Orcun Seyrek 6-4; 6-4.
Runnin' Bulldog freshman Ernest Alberch recorded two A2 Singles wins, defeating August Iwdal (Campbell) 7-5; 7-5 and Jorge Azuero (Liberty) 7-6(6); 6-3. Alberch recorded his first collegiate match victory this weekend.
GWU freshman Stephen Martin also notched his first collegiate win at the UNC-G Invitational, defeating Liberty's Jorge Azuero 6-1; 4-6; 6-4 in the round of 16 before falling to Zachary Pine (Virginia Tech) in the quarterfinals.
Matthew Parker, a junior from Marietta, Ga., won a hard-fought opening match against Ondrej Kralik (Campbell) 4-6; 7-6(4); 7-6(4) for his first win of the year. Parker battled in a tough three-set quarterfinal match against eventual A3 Singles champion Tom Rees (UNC-A), but fell 7-6(4); 2-6; 6-3.
The doubles tandem of Brendan Dempsey and Blake Dunlap advanced to the quarterfinals in B Doubles play, but fell to Kinney/Kralik (Campbell) 8-4.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action Sep. 23-24 in Boiling Springs, N.C. for the GWU Fall Invitational.
