
McClay Places Top 5, Zimmerman Top 10 to Lead GWU Cross Country at Winthrop Invite

Rock Hill, S.C. - Sophomore Mike McClay and junior Ariel Zimmerman posted top 5 and top 10 finishes respectively to lead Gardner-Webb's men's and women's cross country teams at the vaunted Winthrop Invite.
Eight Runnin' Bulldogs posted personal best times on Saturday, led by Zimmerman and McClay.
Zimmerman recorded her third top 10 finish of the year, running the 5K in a personal best time of 18:49.03, good enough for 9th. Senior Elisabeth Sawyer crossed the line next for the GWU women, also running a season best 20:00.15 in placing 39th.
Ellie Glunk was next for the Runnin' Bulldogs, knocking over a minute off her season best time to run a personal best 20:16.15. Senior Leah Steinke and sophomore Katie Spiro also ran season bests at 21:17.60 and 21.22.80.
Also achieving personal bests for the Runnin' Bulldog women were Ivana Hughes (21:31.16) and Stacia Orock (22:59.97)
For the men, McClay led the charge with his third consecutive top 5 finish in 2011, placing 3rd in the 8K race with a personal best time of 25:35.97. Thus far this season, McClay has posted top 5 showings at the UNC Invite, the Charlotte Duels, and now the Winthrop Invite.
Josiah Stanton-Brooks placed 18th in a time of 26:40.17 for Gardner-Webb, also a personal best. Stanton-Brooks was followed for GWU by sophomores Justin Loy and Trey Crook, running personal bests of 28:30.98 and 28:41.95 in the first 8K race of the season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
GWU cross country will take a week off to prepare for the Charlotte Cross Country Invitational on Friday, Sep. 30 in Charlotte, N.C. The race is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
