GWU Falls on the Road 4-2 to Georgia State
September 19, 2011 | Women's Soccer
Atlanta, Ga. - Gardner-Webb got a goal from seniors Dawn Rollyson and Megan Reimer, but dropped the match 4-2 to host Georgia State on Sunday.
The Runnin' Bulldogs defense has had tough luck recently in the second half of games, having allowed five second half goals to only one first half goal in its last two contests.
GWU fell into an early hole against Georgia State, allowing Panther F Jewel Evans to capitalize on one of her two shots on goal to put the home team up 1-0.
The Runnin' Bulldogs countered with a penalty kick by senior Dawn Rollyson, who supplied GWU the goal that pushed the match to a 1-1 tie with her sixth goal of the 2011 season.
GWU came out fighting in the second half, seizing the momentum thanks to Reimer's first goal of the season, a strike into the back of the net after Rollyson's cross from the right side deflected off a GSU defender and pushed the score to 2-1 in favor of the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Panthers countered quickly with three goals in less than 10 minutes, as GWU was unable to respond to Georgia State's offensive pressure and deny open looks at the net. Panther Whitney Ravan struck a ball into the left corner of the GWU goal to provide the final 4-2 margin.
Georgia State capitalized on the home atmosphere and moved to 3-6 on the year, while the Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 0-2-2 on the road and 2-3-3 overall.
Gardner-Webb will take a week off before opening Big South play. The Runnin' Bulldogs host Winthrop Tuesday, Sep. 27 at Greene-Harbison Field, a match slated to begin at 7 p.m.
