Gardner-Webb Drops Big South Opener to Winthrop at Home on Tuesday Night
September 28, 2011 | Women's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to hold off a hot Winthrop team in the Big South Conference opener for both teams, dropping the match 7-2 on Tuesday night.
Gardner-Webb (2-4-3) was able to control the pace of the game during the first period despite being outshot by the Eagles 10-9. The Runnin' Bulldogs overcame a 1st minute Winthrop goal and fought out of the 1-0 deficit thanks to a Meagan Reynolds penalty kick in the 9th minute. Reynolds' goal, her second on the season, was awarded the penalty shot after making a nice move inside Winthrop's box and being fouled in front of the goal.
GWU took the lead shortly after on a Megan Reimer goal in the 11th minute, also her second of the year, as the senior from Hamilton, OH played a cross from freshman Megan Curan to beat the goalkeeper on the left side.
It looked as though GWU would take the lead going into halftime, but Winthrop's Krystynna Freda trickled a drop shot over the Runnin' Bulldog defense in the 43rd minute to knot the score at 2-2 going into the break.
Winthrop (5-4) controlled the pace in the second half, using three goals from Freda to pull away for the win.
Gardner-Webb will return to action this Thursday, traveling to Buies Creek, N.C. to face Big South Conference foe Campbell at 7 p.m. Winthrop will take on take on the Camels as well, with the match coming this Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C. at 7 p.m.
