GWU Cross Country Competes in Season Opener at UNC Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's Cross Country team took home a second-place team finish and the men's team took third behind Mike McClay's first-place individual run at the 2011 UNC Invitational on Friday.
For the women, Sophomore Ariel Zimmerman led the Runnin' Bulldog charge, finishing the 4K race in 7th place with a time of 16:04.64. Redshirt Junior Ellie Glunk and Redshirt Sophomore Ivana Hughes followed closely behind, finishing in 8th (16:44.29) and 9th (17:06.24) respectively.
Sophomore runner Katie Spiro also garnered a top-10 finish in the race, placing 10th in a time of 17:07.63 and giving the Runnin' Bulldogs four top-10 finishes.
On the men's side, Sophomore Mike McClay earned a first-place finish, holding off a charge by UNC's Matt Valeriani and clocking in a time of 14:55.16. The breakthrough performance by McClay marked a personal best time as well as his first career collegiate victory.
GWU Junior Josiah Stanton-Brooks also recorded a top-10 finish, placing 10th in a personal best time of 15:58.94, as the Runnin' Bulldogs finished one point behind Barton College for second place.
Both the men's and women's teams from UNC took home team victories Friday.
Gardner-Webb Cross Country will next be in action Saturday Sep. 10 at the Charlotte Duels in Charlotte, N.C. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
