Buies Creek, N.C. - Gardner-Webb battled on the road in Big South Conference action Thursday night, seeing a close game slip away in the waning minutes as Campbell took home the 3-0 victory.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-5-3) held the Camels (7-3) scoreless in the first half, fighting off five Campbell shot attempts before halftime to keep the Camels' score at zero. GWU was unable to get consistent looks on the offensive end to break the scoreless tie and went into the break knotted at 0-0.
After two saves by Erika Lenns early in the second half, Campbell got a goal in the 62nd minute from Pirjo Leppikangas off an assist on a corner kick for a 1-0 Camels lead.
GWU earned a prime opportunity to tie the game up when senior Dawn Rollyson was awarded a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Her shot attempt was saved by Camels keeper Ryann Torrero to keep the score at 1-0. GWU had another good look at the tie on a Mackenzie Davis shot, but it too was saved by Torrero.
Campbell's Leppikangas tacked on two more goals in the final ten minutes to provide the final margin.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return home next week, taking on Big South rivals Liberty (Thursday, Oct. 8) and High Point (Saturday, Oct. 10) at Greene-Harbison Field during Family Weekend on Gardner-Webb's campus. Campbell will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to face Big South foe Winthrop this Saturday.
