
Rogers Places Second in Weight Throw as Gardner-Webb Track & Field Shows at the Dick Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs impressed this weekend among the more than 20 teams competing at the Dick Taylor Invitational, posting several noteworthy finishes among tough competition which included ACC heavyweights UNC and Duke.
The meet marks the first of 2012 for both the Gardner-Webb men's and women's track & field squads early in the Indoor season.
On day one, Gardner-Webb's Ariel Zimmerman ran the 3000 m run in 11:00.85, good enough for 15th. Elisabeth Sawyer finished 18th in 11:13.20.
GWU's Sarah Herd grabbed a 7th place finish in the high jump (1.60 m) on day two. The GWU long jumpers got two top ten finishers, with Ann Marie Howell taking 4th at 3.55m and Taylor Cook snagging 10th at 3.20 m. Leah Steinke took 18th in the 1 mile run for the Runnin' Bulldogs with a time of 5:48.31.
Ivana Hughes posted a 5th place finish in the 800 m run, recording a time of 2:20.93. Also competing for GWU in the 800 m run were Cherish Richardson (18th, 2:32.09) and Katie Spiro (19th, 2:32.71).
GWU put two in the top ten in the women's shot put, as Ashlei Alexander finished in 3rd after throwing 12.72 m and Stephanie Hamilton finished 8th with a distance of 11.65 m.
The "A 4x400 m relay" for GWU finished in 13th place, as T'Keyah Bell, Olivia Moody, Mariah Richardson, and Cherish Richardson combined for a time of 4:09.74.
Day one saw the Gardner-Webb men grasp four top 10 finishes. Travis Rogers posted a 2nd place showing in the weight throw (18.07 m). Teammate C.J. Wise came in 9th with a distance of 13.97 m.
Freshman Chris Darden leaped to a 6th place finish in the long jump (6.88 m). Clint McManus followed with a 6th place showing in the pole vault, recording a top height of 4.50 m.
Johnathan Parks had a solid showing in the 60 m hurdles, finishing in 14th place with a time of 8.49 seconds.
On day two, Darden took 7th in the High Jump, marking his second top ten finish on the weekend. The freshman recorded a height of 1.96 m in the event. In the 400 m dash, GWU's Miles Harris and Codi Merritt finished 17th (52.50) and 18th (52.73) respectively.
Carson Sears wrapped up a strong weekend for the Gardner-Webb throwers, posting a 4th place finish in the shot put (14.68 m).
Gardner-Webb will be back in action at the Niswonger Invitational Jan. 28-29 in Johnson City, Ten.
