
Tyler Cockrell Named Big South Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

Charlotte, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's Tyler Cockrell (Tulsa, Okla.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played Sept. 24-30, the Big South Conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Cockrell's play at the net was a huge help for Gardner-Webb's defense. She put up 11 blocks and averaged one block per set. In the match against USC Upstate, she posted four blocks and three digs. Against Radford, she recorded another seven blocks and one dig.
The weekly honor is Cockrell's first this season and third overall. She was named Defensive Player of the Week once last season and the Freshman of the Week once back in 2010.
Coastal Carolina outside hitter Gabriella Horvath (Budapest, Hungary) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Volleyball Player of the Week, while Liberty outside hitter Caroline Douglas (Greenville, N.C.) was the CRONS Brand Freshman of the Week.
Also nominated for volleyball Player of the Week for Week 6: Lindsey Coasts (Campbell), Tyler Cockrell (Gardner-Webb), Jamie McDonald (High Point), Rachel Hall (Presbyterian), Yacine Meyer (Radford) and Holly Shelton (UNC Asheville).
Also nominated for volleyball Freshman of the Week for Week 6: Sam Zuber (Campbell), Meredith Parrott (Charleston Southern), Gabriella Horvath (Coastal Carolina), Annemarie Chin (High Point), Cheyanne James (Radford) and Katie Davis (UNC Asheville).
Also nominated for volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for Week 6: Mallorie Cubillos (Campbell), Ashley Higgenbothem (Charleston Southern), Chelsea Davis (High Point), Gabreille Shipe (Liberty) and Katelyn Meeks (Radford).
