GWU Women's Golf Takes 10th-Place at the 2012 UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament

Greensboro, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's golf team posted a combined two round score of 915, +63, to finish in 10th-place overall in the team standings at the 2012 UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament held at the Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs carded rounds of 306, 304 and 305 to finish the three-round combined score of 915, +63, to finish in 10th-place overall over the two-day event. The 10th-place finish put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead of Winthrop, Jacksonville, Western Carolina, host UNC Greensboro, High Point and Eastern Kentucky.
Seniors Hannah Hellyer and Sammy Vass paced the Runnin' Bulldogs on Monday and Tuesday, as each upperclassman posted a three-round combined score of 227, +14, to place in a five-way tie for 30th-place overall. Hellyer carded rounds of 73, 73 and 81 en route to her score of 227, +14, while Vass posted rounds of 74, 77 and 76 over the two-day event to achieve her score of 227, +14.
Fellow seniors Meghan Allum and Lauren Smith were not far behind, as Allum shot rounds of 79, 78 and 74 to finish in a tie for 46th-place overall with a tournament score of 231, +18, while Smith finished only one stroke behind Allum with her combined score of 232, +19, to finish in a tie at 48th-place. Smith registered rounds of 80, 76 and 76 over the two-day event.
Rounding out the scoring for GWU was freshman Mary Katherine Donovan who carded rounds of 82, 78 and 79 to finish in a tie for 66th-place overall with a combined score of 239, +26.
East Tennessee State won the event with a combined team score of 852, even par, while Maryland (876, +24) and East Carolina (881 +29) finished in second and third, respectively.
Gardner-Webb will return to competition next week, as the women's golf team will compete at the Winthrop Intercollegiate on October 6-7th in Rock Hill, S.C.
