
Errors Haunt GWU in 3-0 Home Loss to Charleston Southern on Saturday Afternoon

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb volleyball team committed 35 errors overall, which the Charleston Southern Buccaneers took advantage of to defeat the Runnin' Bulldogs in straight sets 26-28, 19-25 and 19-25 in Big South action on Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The loss, which is Gardner-Webb's second straight at home, puts the Runnin' Bulldogs at 8-17 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The win pushes Charleston Southern to 10-16 overall and 4-5 in the Big South.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' Emily Holte and Erin Anderson led the way with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while freshman libero Anna Pashkova tallied a team-high 14 digs to go along with two aces over the three set match.
The duo of Kayla Klinger and Sydney Tracy led the way for Charleston Southern, posting 15 and 10 kills, respectively, while Klinger also added a match-high 15 digs in the three set win.
The first set, which included 23 ties and 12 lead changes, opened up with a 2-0 lead for the Buccaneers, only to have the Runnin' Bulldogs tie the set up at 3-3 on a Holte kill.
The two teams went point for point over the next several possessions, as neither team could pull away for the majority of the set until the home team took a two point lead at 21-19 on another kill by Holte.
After a Charleston Southern timeout, a GWU service error followed up by a Buccaneer service ace retied the score at 21-21.
Again the two teams would trade points over the next several rallies putting the score at 26-26 when back-to-back Runnin' Bulldog attack errors handed the Buccaneers the 28-26 first set win.
Gardner-Webb fell behind early once again at the start of the second set, as a kill by Wynter Davis put the visitors on top at 7-4 to start the frame.
A 6-3 run by the Runnin' Bulldogs, capped of by a Pashkova service ace, knotted the score up at 10-10.
After a CSU error pushed the home team in front for the first time at 11-10, the two teams traded points until, a Meredith Parrott kill retied the score up a third time at 12-12.
The Parrott kill jump-started an 8-0 spurt for the Charleston Southern Buccaneers who ran out to a seven-point lead at 19-12.
Gardner-Webb got to as close as five down the stretch, yet the CSU lead proved to be too much, as the Bucs came away with the 25-19 second set victory.
For the third straight set, GWU fell behind early, this time 3-0 on a kill by the Buccaneers' Tracy, only to battle its way back into the frame, taking a 10-9 lead on a CSU error.
A kill by Amanda Murphy put the Runnin' Bulldogs in front at 11-10, yet again the Buccaneers responded with a mid-set offensive surge, this time outscoring GWU 11-2 to run out to a 20-13.
Despite, outscoring the Buccaneers 6-5 down the stretch, the Runnin' Bulldogs could not overcome the deficit and ultimately fell to CSU 25-19.
GWU totaled 38 kills, on a .148 attack percentage, yet totaled 20 attack errors, six service errors, six receiving errors and three block errors for the match.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will hit the road to take on Campbell next Friday night, October 26th, at 7 p.m., while the Buccaneers will step out of conference play to host South Carolina State at 6 p.m. on October 23rd.
