GWU Men's Soccer Set for Two Conference Road Matches this Week

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team will wrap up its regular season road schedule this week with matches at Winthrop and Liberty, two key Big South Conference bouts that will help settle the close conference regular season standings.
Gardner-Webb will travel to nearby Rock Hill, S.C. to do battle with the Winthrop Eagles on Wednesday night, October 24th, at 7 p.m., before playing its final road match of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, October 27th, against the Liberty Flames at 2 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
Gardner-Webb (3-11-1, 2-3-1 Big South) started the month of October off with three straight wins, yet has dropped each of its last three matches with losses at No. 23 High Point, at Clemson and at home versus No. 10 Coastal Carolina.
During its current three-match losing streak, GWU has been outscored 8-1, but pushed the two top-25 nationally teams in No. 23 High Point and No. 10 Coastal Carolina to the limit with a 1-2 double overtime loss at High Point and a 1-0 home loss to the Chanticleers.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to snap its current skid, however, GWU has struggled on the road thus far this season, posting a 1-7-1 record in true road matches this season with the lone win coming at UNC Asheville on October 10th.
The Winthrop Eagles (6-7-1, 2-3-1 Big South) enter play this week 3-1-1 at home at Eagle Field on the year and are coming off a 1-1 draw with the Liberty Flames last Saturday night.
While the Runnin' Bulldogs are only 3-12-2 against the Eagles on the pitch, GWU has won two of the last three matches against the Eagles, including a 2-1 win last year in the first round of the 2011 Big South Championship Tournament.
Gardner-Webb's final road match of the regular season will come on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. versus the Liberty Flames in Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty (6-6-1, 4-1-1), who will host High Point on Tuesday night, October 23rd, for its mid-week Big South Conference match up, are coming off a 1-1 draw at Winthrop last Saturday night.
The Flames, who are only 2-4 at home thus far this season, have not loss over its last five matches (4-0-1) and will look to extend its unbeaten streak this week with two home contests at Osborne Stadium.
GWU, who is 4-9-1 against the Liberty Flames all-time in men's soccer action, has won two out of the last three meetings versus the Flames, including a 2-0 win in Lynchburg, Va. back in 2010.
Saturday afternoon's match is the first meeting between these two teams on the pitch since Liberty upended Gardner-Webb 3-1 in last year's 2011 Big South Men's Soccer Championship match held in Boiling Springs, N.C.
