Beatty, Lindsey and White Earn Big South Conference Weekly Football Honors
October 29, 2012 | Football
Beatty (Charlotte, N.C. / Olympic HS) was named Offensive Player of the Week, Lindsey (Roebuck, S.C. / Dorman HS) was named Special Teams Player of the Week and White (Miami, Fla. / Coral Gables HS) was named Freshman of the Week after Gardner-Webb's 38-7 win over VMI.
Beatty posted his third 300-yard passing performance of the season, becoming the first Gardner-Webb quarterback to do so since Devin Campbell in 2008. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder completed 24-of-32 attempts for 328 yards and a career-high four touchdowns - tying a record for most scoring passes in a Big South game for a Gardner-Webb quarterback (Nick Roberts at VMI, October 18, 2003).
Beatty's effort marked the first time in 10 years that a Gardner-Webb quarterback has passed for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns in the same game, with Jeremy Martin the last to do so against Savannah State on November 16, 2002 (351 yards, 5 TD).
Beatty connected on his first six passes and gave Gardner-Webb a 10-7 lead at halftime with his first touchdown pass of the game just before the break. He was sizzling in the third quarter, completing 7-of-11 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns - including scoring tosses of 64 and 47 yards to Demarcus White.
The 202.35 single-game pass efficiency rating is the highest of Beatty's career. The margin of victory in Saturday's game is the largest for Gardner-Webb in league play since a 46-0 win over Charleston Southern on November 3, 2003.
Beatty now leads the Big South Conference with 1,822 yards passing through eight games (235.3 yards per game). He also leads the league in completions (165) and ranks second with a 67.6 completion percentage. Beatty is averaging 289.3 yards per game in Big South play.
College Sports Madness also named Beatty its Big South Conference Offensive Player of the Week following Saturday's performance.
Lindsey continued to put up impressive numbers punting the football, averaging 46.8 yards on five punts against VMI. The senior standout pinned punts at the 15 and five-yard lines and boomed punts of 52, 51 and 50 yards against the Keydets.
Lindsey leads the Big South in punting with an average of 43.2 yards per attempt this season, and has 12 punts of 50 yards or longer. He also has pinned 12 punts inside the 20-yard line in 2012.
White had a breakout game against the Keydets, catching three passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. He started the Runnin' Bulldogs' third quarter rally with a 64-yard touchdown on GWU's first possession of the second half, outrunning the VMI defense to the end zone.
White, who entered the game with just two catches for 12 yards this season, added a 47-yard scoring catch with 2:06 to play in the third quarter to cap the game's scoring. White's 64-yarder is the longest play from scrimmage for GWU this season.
Gardner-Webb remains at home for its next game, hosting Coastal Carolina in the Big South's Game of the Week on November 3. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium. The game will air live on ESPN3 (watchespn.com).
