November 01, 2012 | Wrestling
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team is set to open up its 2012-13 season this weekend, as a number of Runnin' Bulldog grapplers will compete as individuals at The Citadel Open on Saturday, November 3rd, in Charleston, S.C. and at the Hokie Open on Sunday, November 4th, in Salem, Va.
First year head coach Daniel Elliott takes over a team in 2012-13 that is a mixture of young and old, recent and new, experienced and inexperienced, as the top-six grapplers over the last two seasons return and are joined by 14 newcomers, all of which are true freshman.
A handful of those newcomers will see action for the first-time at the intercollegiate level on Saturday at The Citadel Open as a number of freshman will make the trip to Charleston, S.C.
Returners Justin Kozera, Aaron Rabin, Julian Ming, Josh Burns and Matt Kowalski will all return to the open where they competed last year to kick off the 2011-12 season.
On Sunday, a group of seven GWU wrestlers, including Justin Guthrie, Alex Medved, Ryan Medved, Travis Porter, Blake Salyer, Robbie Golde and Davante Andujar, are slated to compete at the Hokie Open in Salem, Va.
It will mark the second straight year in which the Runnin' Bulldogs have taken seven grapplers to the Hokie Open, as last year's group was headlined by Guthrie and Ryan Medved who each posted multiple wins at the one-day event.
The Southern Conference's eight wrestling coaches picked Gardner-Webb to finish in fifth in this year's Southern Conference Preseason Coaches Poll this season. Gardner-Webb, which competed in the SoCon for the first time last season, was selected fifth with a total of 25 points.
The SoCon coaches also selected Guthrie to the SoCon preseason all-conference team at 165 pounds. Guthrie posted a 19-17 overall record last season with 10 of those victories coming in dual match action, including three in Southern Conference competition. The redshirt-senior led the Runnin' Bulldog grapplers with six pin fall wins last season.
