GWU Wrestling Downs George Mason, Falls to No. 16 Virginia at Movember Duals

Boiling Springs, N.C. - In the first annual Movember Duals, the Runnin' Bulldog wrestlers split in its two matches, falling to No. 16 Virginia 36-3 and then bouncing back to defeat George Mason 24-12, on Saturday in Paul Porter Arena.
No. 16 Virginia 36, Gardner-Webb 3
GWU's Porter recorded the lone win of the dual versus the Cavaliers, earning a 6-0 win at 285 pounds.
The nationally ranked Cavaliers took control of the match early, posting a pin fall win at 125 pounds to take an early 6-0 lead.
Redshirt-sophomore Robbie Golde battled Joe Spisak for all three periods before ultimately suffering a 2-0 loss to the nationally ranked foe at 133 pounds, putting the Runnin' Bulldogs behind 9-0 after two bouts.
GWU sophomore Davante Andujar loss to Jimmy Nehls at 141 pounds 8-3, while at 149 pounds redshirt-senior Ryan Medved was shutout in a 5-0 loss to Derek Valenti.
Virginia added to its lead with back-to-back major decision wins at 157 and 165 pounds, while Jonathan Fausey pushed the Cavaliers lead to 29-0 with a pin at 174 pounds.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would drop the next two matches at 184 and 197, before Porter posted a 6-0 shutout win over Patrick Gillen at 285 pounds to spoil the shutout and put the final score at 36-3 in favor of the Cavaliers.
Gardner-Webb 24, George Mason 12
In the Runnin' Bulldogs' second match of the day, GWU took control early with six straight wins to start the bout.
Freshman grappler Tyler Ziegler held on for a 6-4 decision over Rich Lavarato at 125 pounds, while Golde led from start to finish in his 8-3 win over Zach Isenhour at 133 pounds.
With the 6-0 lead, GWU's Andujar used a strong third period to defeat Sahid Kargbo 9-6, which the Runnin' Bulldogs' followed up with a 6-3 win by Ryan Medved at 149 pounds and a 3-0 shutout decision by Alex Medved over Jaaziah Bethea at 157 pounds.
Fellow redshirt-senior Justin Guthrie added to the Runnin' Bulldogs lead with a fall at 5:31 over Kenton Perez to push the home team in front at 21-0.
After a loss at 174 pounds put the score at 21-6 in favor of the Runnin' Bulldogs, freshman Gray Jones recorded a decisive 11-4 win over Coriston Smith to extend the GWU lead to 24-6 with two contests to go.
George Mason would earn back-to-back decisions at 197 and 285 pounds to put the final match score at 24-12 in favor of the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Runnin' Bulldog grapplers will hit the mat one more time this weekend, as a handful of wrestlers will compete at the Wolfpack Open tomorrow in Raleigh, N.C.
Gardner-Webb (1-1) will remain at home to host Belmont Abbey in dual match action on Monday, November 19th, at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
