November 07, 2012 | Volleyball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb volleyball team will wrap up its 2012 regular season slate this weekend in the state of Virginia, as the Runnin' Bulldogs are scheduled to face off with Radford on Friday night at 7 p.m. and against the Liberty Lady Flames on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. in two vital Big South Conference match ups.
Gardner-Webb (9-20, 4-8 Big South) is coming off a tough weekend of play at home, in which the Runnin' Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Winthrop on Friday night, after leading the match 2-0, and then endured a let down on Saturday evening in a 3-0 loss to Presbyterian College.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, who have lost three straight matches, are in need of a win not only to stop its current losing skid, but also to get into the upcoming 2012 Big South Volleyball Championship Tournament, presented by Musco Sports Lighting.
Entering play this weekend, GWU is in a three-way tie with both Radford and Charleston Southern for the last two seeds in the upcoming postseason championship tournament. The Runnin' Bulldogs have one win over Radford already this season, a 3-1 win at home back on September 29th, yet will be behind Charleston Southern who holds the tiebreaker over the Runnin' Bulldogs with a win in the two teams' only match up this season.
The Highlanders, like GWU, are tied at 4-8 in the conference and looking for a win to get into the Big South Tournament next weekend as well.
Radford, who is 4-6 at home this year, has lost four out of its last five matches, all of which have come in Big South play. The Highlanders have seven different players with 100 kills or more this season led by Emily Carlin and Cheyanne James who have 184 and 181 kills, respectively.
The Liberty Lady Flames, who enter play this week at 20-7 overall and 10-2 in conference play, will look to claim another regular season title this weekend.
Liberty, who is two games ahead of PC in the standings, will take on UNCA at home on Friday night and GWU on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Flames have won each of its last five matches and eight of its last 10 contests overall.
Both matches are slated to be video streamed live over the Big South Network and can be viewed by going to www.bigsouthsports.com.
