GWU Drops Three Straight Duals at the Hoosier Duals on Saturday

Bloomington, Ind. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team suffered three straight losses in dual meet action on Saturday afternoon at the Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Indiana on the campus of Indiana University.
In GWU's first match of the day, the Runnin' Bulldog grapplers split the 10 bouts with the Bison of Bucknell five wins apiece, however, Bucknell registered four pins over Gardner-Webb to defeat the Runnin' Bulldogs 27-15 in the match.
Gardner-Webb fell behind early 9-0 in the match with a fall and a loss at the two low weights of 125 and 133 pounds, yet bounced back with three straight wins in the next three contests.
Sophomore Davante Andujar got the Runnin' Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 5-3 win over Derrik Russell at 141 pounds, while redshirt-senior Ryan Medved followed with a 2-0 shutout win over Adam Healey at 149 pounds to cut the Bison's lead to three at 9-6.
GWU's Alex Medved tied the match score up at 9-9 with his win at 157 pounds, as the redshirt-senior defeated Vincent Favia 8-1.
After losses at 165 and 174 pounds, both of which were falls, GWU freshman Gray Jones held on for a 3-1 win over Robert Marchese at 184 pounds to put the Runnin' Bulldogs down nine at 21-12 with two matches to go in the dual.
With the match decision over after a Tyler Lyster pin fall win at 197 pounds, redshirt-senior Travis Porter refused to quit, but rather posted a strong performance to earn a 5-3 decision over Joe Stolfi at the heavyweight and put the final match score at 27-15.
Again falls would doom the Runnin' Bulldogs in its second match of the day, as falls at 157, 174 and 197 pounds to the Cougars allowed Southern Illinois - Edwardsville to edge Gardner-Webb 24-21.
Freshman Tyler Ziegler put GWU on top 6-0 early with a forfeit win at 125 pounds, while Andujar increased the Runnin' Bulldog lead to 9-3 with a 4-0 shutout of Brandon Brindley 141 pounds.
After Ryan Medved's 6-5 decision, with the help of riding time, pushed GWU in front by nine at 12-3, the Runnin' Bulldogs hit a tough stretch, dropping the next three bouts, which included two pins, to fall behind to the Cougars 18-12 in the dual match score.
GWU's Jones earned a 4-2 sudden victory win at 184 pounds over Jake Tindle to put the Runnin' Bulldogs in striking distance at 18-15 of the Cougars with two bouts remaining.
However, a fall at 197 pounds by the Cougars' Josh Wood at 1:57 of the match handed SIUE a 24-15 lead and despite a forfeit win at the heavyweight position by GWU's Porter it wasn't enough for Gardner-Webb who dropped its first Southern Conference match of the season 24-21 to the SIUE Cougars.
In perhaps the toughest match of the day, the Runnin' Bulldogs recorded two wins in a loss at Indiana 29-7 in the third and final dual of the day.
Down 10-0 after losses at the three lower weight classes, Ryan Medved earned a 10-2 major decision win over Alexander Gregory at 149 pounds to put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the scoreboard at 10-4.
After back-to-back losses to nationally ranked top-25 foes at 157 and 165 pounds, and two more losses at 174 and 184 pounds, redshirt-senior Blake Salyer posted a 4-0 decision over Tarek Alaruri at 197 pounds.
Gardner-Webb (2-4, 0-1 SoCon) will return to the mat on Tuesday night, December 4th, as the Runnin' Bulldog grapplers will face off with the Mountaineers of Appalachian State at 6:30 p.m. in Boone, N.C.
