Gardner-Webb Returns To Paul Porter Arena Saturday Night Against The Citadel
December 14, 2012 | Men's Basketball
Gardner-Webb will host a special alumni function prior to Saturday's game, with former players and their guests invited to the Abernethy Bulldog Suite beginning at 5:30. Food and beverages will be provided, as well as tickets to the GWU-Citadel game.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-5) last saw the floor on December 8 in a 61-41 win over Tennessee Tech. That game saw GWU hold the Golden Eagles more than 30 points below their season scoring average and just 29 percent shooting from the floor.
Coach Chris Holtmann's squad ranks at the top of the Big South Conference in both field goal percentage defense (39.1 percent) and scoring defense (56.9 ppg) through 11 games, despite playing a schedule that featured four BCS-level teams in the first two weeks of the season.
The Citadel (3-4) will be coming off a lengthy break in its season as well, having last played 11 days ago in a 101-73 loss at crosstown foe Charleston Southern. The Bulldogs have dropped three straight, but do own an 84-76 win over Big South member VMI already this season.
Coach Chuck Driesell's Bulldogs are led by All-SoCon center Mike Groselle (16.6 ppg, 7.7 ppg), who dropped in 18 points in the team's last game. The 6-foot-8, 245-pound native of Plano, Texas, also crossed the 1,000-point plateau with that performance.
Swingman Matt Van Scyoc (11.3 ppg) also has good size for his position at 6-foot-6, 220 and is joined in double figures by guard Lawrence Miller (10.4 ppg). Point man Marshall Harris III is supplying 7.1 points and nearly seven assists per game - powering an offense that scores 70.9 points per game and has been effective (48-of-129, 37.2 percent) from long distance.
Paced by Groselle inside at 62.0 percent, the Bulldogs are shooting 47.4 percent from the floor as a team. Six different players will enter Saturday's game shooting at a 50-percent clip or better from the floor. Van Scyoc has been outstanding inside and out, shooting 51.9 percent overall and a sizzling 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from deep.
Tickets for Saturday night's game are available at the door. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for non-GWU students. For more information on Saturday's alumni event, contact Director of Operations Paul Hemrick via email (phemrick@gardner-webb.edu) or at (704) 406-2172.
