GWU Wrestling Edged by Appalachian State, 21-19, in Dual Match Action

Boone, N.C. - Despite posting five wins out of the 10 contests on Tuesday night, the Gardner-Webb wrestling team was edged by the Mountaineers of Appalachian State 21-19 in Southern Conference dual match action in Boone, N.C.
The dual match loss drops GWU to 2-5 on the year and 0-2 in Southern Conference action thus far this season.
Gardner-Webb bounced back from a fall at 125 pounds and an early 6-0 deficit to tie the score up at 6-6 with two wins in the next two bouts at 133 and 141 pounds.
Redshirt-sophomore Robbie Golde earned a 6-3 decision over Brett Boston at 133 pounds to put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the scoreboard for the match, while sophomore Davante Andujar followed with a 5-4 win over William Johnson at 141 pounds to tie the match score up at 6-6.
After a GWU forfeit at 149 pounds pushed the Mountaineers back on top at 12-6 in the match, redshirt-senior Alex Medved dominated at 157 pounds, recording a 15-5 major decision win over Aaron Scott to cut the Appalachian State lead to two at 12-10.
Two tough losses for Gardner-Webb at 165 and 174 pounds allowed the Mountaineers to extend its lead to eight at 18-10, however, the Runnin' Bulldogs refused to roll over and play dead but rather looked to battle back into the match with three contests remaining.
Freshman Gray Jones registered a 6-3 win at 184 pounds over Jesse Johnson to put GWU down five at 18-13, yet a loss at 197 pounds allowed the Mountaineers to pull out in front by eight at 21-13 and secure itself the dual match win.
With the dual match victory out of reach, redshirt-senior Travis Porter wrapped up the contest with a fall over Joe Cummings at 6:22 in the heavyweight spot to put the final match score at 21-19 in favor of the Appalachian State.
The loss is the Runnin' Bulldogs fourth straight dual match loss and Gardner-Webb's 11th straight overall to the Mountaineers since 2001-02.
GWU (2-5, 0-2 SoCon) will next be in action on Saturday, December 15th, as a number of Runnin' Bulldog wrestlers will travel to Cleveland, Ohio to compete at the Cleveland State Open.
