Rogers, Hughes Highlight Gardner-Webb Performances at Tiger Paw Invitational

Clemson, S.C. - Travis Rogers and Ivana Hughes each registered top three finishes at the Tiger Paw Invitational February 10-11 as the Runnin' Bulldogs turned heads at the prestigious track and field event Friday and Saturday.

Rogers, a senior from Conyers, Ga., achieved a 3rd place finish in the men's weight throw event, throwing a distance of 17.76 m. Rogers also recorded a 12th place showing in the shot put with a personal best distance of 14.52 m.

Hughes, a junior from Evans, Ga., finished in 3rd place in the women's 800 m run recording a time of 2:16.94. Adding to her top three individual finish, Hughes teamed with T'Keyah Bell, Olivia Moody, and Cherish Richardson on Gardner-Webb's 4x400 m relay, finishing in a season best 4:02.01.

On Friday, distance specialist Mike McClay (Lawrenceville, Ga.) recorded 6th and 7th place finishes in the 1000 m run and the 1 mile run respectively, the only runner at the Tiger Paw Invitational to record top 10 finishes in both events. The junior put up personal best times in both events, finishing the 1 mile run in 4:19.28 and the 1000 m run in 2:34.29.

Junior Ariel Zimmerman (Williamsburg, Va.) turned in solid performances in both the 1 mile run and the 3000 m run, finishing 10th (5:10.20) and 11th (10:49.90) respectively. Senior Elizabeth Glunk (Carrolton, Va.) recorded a personal best time in the 3000 m run for the Runnin' Bulldogs, finishing in 11:02.63. Fellow senior Elisabeth Sawyer (Charlotte, N.C.) turned in a personal best performance in the 3000 m run, posting a time of 5:20.94 in the event.

Sophomore Carson Sears (Suwanee, Ga.) put up personal bests in both the weight throw and the shot put, achieving 4th and 11th place finishes in the events respectively. Sears threw for distances of 17.44 m in the weight throw and 14.81 m in the shot put.

Senior Sarah Herd (Cherryville, N.C.) leaped to a 4th place showing in the women's high jump event, achieving a top height of 1.65 m.

In the men's 800 m run, junior Josiah Stanton-Brooks (Seattle, Wa.) finished 5th in a time of 1:55.87.

Senior Ann Marie Howell (Mooreville, Miss.) was one of three Runnin' Bulldogs to finish in the top 10, recording a 6th showing with a top height of 3.61 m. Juniors Bethany Wright (Clayton, Ga.) and Taylor Cook (Boone, N.C.) tied to finish in 7th place at 3.46 m. Wright's performance established a new personal best.

In the men's pole vault event, junior Clint McManus established a new personal best en route to a 7th place finish, vaulting to a height of 4.60 m.

Sophomore Terry Davis snared 8th place in the men's triple jump, achieving a distance of 13.61 m.

Gardner-Webb's throwers continued to impress with four top 20 finishes on the women's side. Sophomore Jasmine Miles (Amelia, Va.) grabbed a 9th place finish in the weight throw, throwing a personal best distance of 15.96 m in the event. Junior Ashlei Alexander (Queens, N.Y.) also recorded a 9th place finish, throwing 13.08 m in the shot put. Juniors Yazzming Lee (Paterson, N.J.) and Stephanie Hamilton (Blair Neb.) turned in 19th and 20th place finishes in the weight throw (14.60 m) and shot put (11.56 m) events for GWU.

Freshman Chris Darden (Athens, Ga.) continued a strong freshman campaign with a 13th place finish in the men's long jump, leaping a distance of 6.61 m.

Junior Leah Steinke (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) turned in a 14th place finish in the women's 800 m run, finishing with a time of 2:23.58. Fellow middle distance runner Katie Spiro finished in 14th position in the women's 1000 m run, achieving a time of 3:12.87.

In the women's long jump, senior Katy Milton (Monroe, N.C.) and sophomore Kristen Hurley (Columbia, Conn.) tied to finish 19th, leaping a distance of 5.10 m. Hurley turned in another 19th place in the 60 m hurdles, establishing a new personal best time of 9.41. Hurley also set a personal best in the 60 m dash, recording a time of 8.18.

Freshman Miles Harris (Atlanta, Ga.) finished 17th in the men's 400 m dash in a season best 51.31 for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

A pair of distance runners turned in personal bests in the men's 3000 m run. Sophomore Drew Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) recorded a time of 9:31.90 and sophomore Justin Loy (Burrington, N.H.) put up a time of 9:33.35 in the event.

Freshman Nicole Saxton (Tampa, Fla.) finished the women's 200 m dash in a season best 27.99 for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Sophomore Ashley Slate turned in a personal best time in the women's 400 m dash with a time of 1:03.48.

Gardner-Webb got a 7th place finish in the 4x400 m relay, as Davis, Harris, Galen Keene, and Codi Merritt combined to finish in 3:27.40.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will take a week off to prepare for the Big South Indoor Championship meet, set for February 24-25 in Blacksburg, Va.
