
Gardner-Webb Men's Golf Finishes Tied for Eighth at the 2012 Charleston Shootout

Hollywood, S.C. - Gardner-Webb freshman golfer Matt Yelverton turned in a top-15 finish to help lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a tie for eighth-place overall with USC Upstate in the team standings at the 2012 Charleston Shootout at the Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs carded team rounds of 293, 299 and 295 to finish with a three-round combined team score of 887, +23, four strokes behind Stephen F. Austin State who finished in seventh-place overall.
Yelverton carded rounds of 70, 75 and 72 to finish the two-day event with a combined score of 217, +1, putting him in 13th-place overall.
Senior Kristopher Gray improved each and every round, starting out with a first round 75, +3, and a second round 74, +2, on Monday. Gray then turned in a third round 72, even par, on Tuesday to finish the tournament with a combined three-round score of 221, +5, good enough to place him in a three-way tie for 21st-place overall.
Gardner-Webb's J.J. Regan finished in an eight-way tie for 33rd-place with his three round combined score of 226, +10, while redshirt-sophomore Daley Byles finished two strokes behind Regan in a tie for 46th-place overall with his score of 228, +12.
Rounding out the scoring for Gardner-Webb was junior Daniel Kim and sophomore Steven Jones who both finished tied for 52nd-place with tournament scores of 229, +13, over the two-day event.
Florida won the event with a team low score of 844, - 20, finishing 15 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Augusta State who shot a combined team score of 859, -5.
Big South members Radford (870) and Charleston Southern (871) finished third and fourth, respectively, while the host institution College of Charleston rounded out the top-five with a score of 875, +11.
Florida's TJ Vogel took home the individual championship, carding rounds of 69, 65 and 72 to finish the two-day event with a tournament low score of 206, -10. Vogel finished ahead of Jacobo Pastor (207) and David Denlinger (209) of Charleston Southern who finished second and third, respectively.
The Gardner-Webb men's golf team will return to action in two weeks, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Barefoot at the Beach Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on March 11-13th.
