
GWU Men's Golf Finishes 15th at the Furman Intercollegiate

Greenville, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's golf team combined to shoot three individual rounds of 70, -2 under par, over the three-day event to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 15th-place team finish in the 43rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs carded team rounds of 294, 288 and 305 to finish the three-round and three-day event with a combined team score of 887, +23, placing them in 15th-place overall. GWU finished one-stroke behind East Tennessee State (886, +22), who placed 14th, and two shots ahead of the University of Michigan (889, +25), who came in 16th-place overall.
Junior Daniel Kim led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a three-round combined score of 217, +1, good enough to put him in a tie at 25th-place overall. Kim, who carded a GWU low round 70, -2 under par, on both Friday and Saturday, posted a third-round 77, +5, on Sunday in which he carded eight bogeys on the day. Prior to Sunday, Kim posted 11 birdies and one eagle compared to only five bogeys over the first two rounds of play.
GWU sophomore Steven Jones played perhaps his best spring tournament to date, as he carded rounds of 74, 74 and 76 to finish in a tie at 62nd-place overall with a combined three-round score of 224, +8. Jones, who posted nine birdies overall for the three-day event, had a strong back nine on Saturday with two birdies and seven pars en route to a 34, -2 und par, to start his second round of play.
Gardner-Webb freshman Matt Yelverton finished just one stroke behind fellow teammate Jones with his combined score of 225, +9, placing him in a tie at 67th-place overall, while redshirt-sophomore Daley Byles turned in a three-day score of 228, +12, to finish in a tie at 86th-place overall for the event.
Yelverton, which turned in rounds of 74, 74 and 77 for the event, recorded eight birdies over the three rounds of play, while Byles, who also tallied eight birdies over the three rounds, was much more up and down, recording one eagle and four double bogeys over his 54-holes of play.
Senior Kristopher Gray, who bounced back from a first round 77, +5, on Friday, carded a second round 70, -2, on Saturday before having to withdraw from the event prior to the third round of play on Sunday.
The No. 14 nationally ranked Clemson Tigers won the event, as the Tigers recorded a combined team score of 838, -26, to finish a whole 15 strokes ahead of the second-place finisher in Virginia Tech (853, -11). It was the Tigers' third-straight win at the Furman Intercollegiate.
The Runnin' Bulldogs finished ahead of Michigan, Presbyterian, Elon, Winthrop, Western Carolina and Temple in the team standings.
The Gardner-Webb men's golf team will return to competition in three weeks, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Wofford Intercollegiate on April 9-10 in Spartanburg, S.C.
