LEXINGTON,
Ky. - Gardner-Webb men's basketball signee Isaiah Ivey earned 2012
KHSAA Sweet 16 All-Tournament honors after leading Scott County
(Ky.) High to the state finals this past weekend.
Ivey
(6-2, 180) finished in the prestigious tournament's top-5 in
points, rebounds, blocked shots and free throws made and attempted
- and led the tournament in minutes played per game.
The
standout guard averaged 13.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocked
shots per game for the event, and made 21-of-26 free throws.
Ivey's
best game in the tournament came in a win over John Hardin, when he
flirted with a triple-double. He scored 16 points, grabbed 10
rebounds, dished off six assists and blocked a pair of shots in
that 61-40 victory.
Scott
County (34-5), one of the Bluegrass State's perennial powers, fell
short in the state championship game to Louisville (Ky.) Trinity on
Saturday night in Rupp Arena.
Ivey
signed a National Letter of Intent with Gardner-Webb this past
November and will join the Runnin' Bulldogs for the 2012-2013
season.
"We are
proud of Isaiah and excited about him being a part of our second
recruiting class," said Gardner-Webb head coach Chris Holtmann. "He
has had a terrific year. Like Donta [Harper] last year, the
experience you gain from playing in a state championship game is
both memorable and valuable."
Ivey is
the second Gardner-Webb recruit in the past two seasons to lead his
team to the state finals. Current GWU wing Donta Harper led his
South Central (N.C.) squad to the North Carolina Class 3A state
championship game in 2c011.
Ivey
led the Cardinals during the regular season in scoring at 16.4 ppg
and is a likely All-State selection when those teams are announced
later this spring.
He is
rated as the No. 3 senior prospect in Kentucky by ESPN.com, and as
the No. 89 shooting guard nationally by that same website.
