
Juniors Hellyer and Vass Lead GWU Past High Point in Match Play

St. Augustine, Fla. - The Gardner-Webb women's golf team was led by juniors Hannah Hellyer and Sammy Vass, as the two took first-place and second-place, respectively, to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a two-day match play win over the High Point Panthers in the St. Augustine Surf and Turf tournament on March 4-5 in St. Augustine, Fla.
The two-day event featured two matches between Gardner-Webb and High Point. The Runnin' Bulldogs turned in a combined two-day team score of 647 to defeat High Point who recorded a combined team score of 655.
On a very windy Sunday, the Runnin' Bulldogs carded a combined team score of 322 to finish five strokes ahead of High Point on day one of play at the St. Augustine Surf and Turf at the Palencia Club.
On Monday, both teams played for the first time at the Marsh Creek Country Club with Gardner-Webb edging out High Point once more, this time 325 to 328 to secure the match play win.
Hellyer, who led the way on Sunday with a round of 74, +2, posted a round of 80, +8, on Monday to finish with a two-day combined score of 154, +10, to claim first-place overall on the individual leaderboard.
Vass led the way on day two of the two-day event, carding a 78, +6, to finish the two-day event in second-place with a combined score of 161, +17, finishing just ahead of fellow teammate Meghan Allum who turned in rounds of 80 and 83 to finish in a four-way tie for third with a score of 163, +19.
Rounding out the scoring for the GWU women's golf team was junior Lauren Smith, who carded rounds of 85 and 84 to finish with a combined score of 169, +25, good enough for eighth-place overall, and senior Courtney Finocchiaro who finished in 12th-place with a combined score of 180, +36.
Sophomore Pilar Morgan, who played as an individual for the two-day event, posted a low round 77, +5, on Monday at the Marsh Creek Country Club to finish with a combined score of 163, +19, to finish in a tie for third-place overall.
Fellow GWU lady golfer Brianna Clemmons also played as an individual, as she recorded a two-day combined score of 177, +33, to place 11th overall individually over the 36-hole event.
Gardner-Webb will return to the links for competition this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldog lady golfers will head north to compete at the Spider Spring Break Women's Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va. on March 10-11th.
