
GWU Women's Golf Takes Third, Junior Hannah Hellyer Earns All-Conference Honors

Ninety Six, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's golf team carded a final round of 310, +22, on Wednesday to finish in third-place overall at the 2012 Big South Women's Golf Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting hosted by Gardner-Webb University at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, S.C.
Gardner-Webb turned in team rounds of 307, 304 and 310 to finish in third-place with a combined three-day score of 921, +57.
Junior Hannah Hellyer turned in her second straight round of 74, +2, on the final day of play to finish with three rounds of 77, 74 and 74 and a combined score of 225, +9, placing her in fifth-place overall for the event. Her fifth-place finish, which included 33 pars, five birdies, one eagle and a par-5 scoring average of 4.75 for the three-day tournament, earned her Big South All-Conference honors for the second straight year.
Her fifth-place finish was her second straight top-five finish at the Big South Women's Golf Championship, having recorded a second-place finish last season.
Fellow teammate Meghan Allum rounded out her tournament play with a 79, +7, on the final day of play, giving her rounds of 76, 78 and 79 to finish in 12th-place overall with a combined score of 233, +17. Like Hellyer, Allum turned in 33 pars and five birdies over the three-day event.
Also posting a top-20 finish at the conference championship was junior Lauren Smith, as she carded rounds of 81, 75 and 79 to finish in a tie at 17th-place overall with a three-round combined score of 235, +19.
Rounding out the competitors for Gardner-Webb was junior Sammy Vass and senior Courtney Finocchiaro. Vass recorded rounds of 76, 77 and 83 to finish in a tie for 20th-place with a combined score of 236, +20, while Finocchiaro, playing in her last collegiate tournament as a Runnin' Bulldog, finished in 24th-place overall with rounds of 78, 81 and 78 and a combined score of 237, +21.
Campbell won the team championship, as the Fighting Camels posted rounds of 294, 300 and 296, giving them a team low score of 890, +26, for the tournament. Coastal Carolina took second-place with a combined team score of 896, +32, finishing 25 strokes ahead of the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Coastal Carolina junior Brittany Henderson took first-place individual honors, as she turned in a three-round combined score of 214, - 2 under par, which is a Big South Women's Golf Championship record.
