
Junior Daniel Kim Shoots a 70, as the GWU Men's Golf Team is in Sixth After Day One at the 2012 Big South Championship

Ninety Six, S.C. - Gardner-Webb junior Daniel Kim led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a first round 70, -2 under par, on Monday, as the men's golf team carded a team round of 292, +4, on day one of the 2012 Big South Men's Golf Championship hosted by Winthrop University at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs team score of 292, +4, puts them in sixth-place overall after day one of competition, one-stroke behind host Winthrop who is in fifth-place at 291, +3.
Kim, whose first round 70, -2 under par, put him in a tie at sixth-place overall, carded a score of 31, -5 under par, on the front nine and totaled eight birdies on the day.
Redshirt-sophomore Daley Byles continued his solid spring, carding a first round 73, +1, on Monday morning to finished tied for 18th overall after the first round of play, while fellow teammate J.J. Regan shot a 74, +2, to put himself in a tie at 23rd-place overall. Both Byles and Regan turned in two birdies on the day.
GWU's All-Conference selection Kristopher Gray recorded 15 pars en route to his day one score of 75, +3, which has him in a tie at 28th overall, while freshman Matt Yelverton had two birdies and posted a 35, -1 under par, on the front nine on his way to a final first round score of 76, +4, placing him in a tie at 31st-place overall heading into day two of play on Tuesday morning.
Liberty leads the team standings with a first round 280, -8 under par, on Monday, placing the Flames five strokes ahead of both Charleston Southern (285, -3) and Coastal Carolina (285, -3), who are tied for second-place overall.
Liberty's Chase Marinell sits atop the individual leader board after shooting a five-under 67. Marinell leads by two strokes over a group of four players comprised of Campbell's Vaita Guillaume, Liberty's Robert Karlsson, Charleston Southern's Ross Thompson and Coastal Carolina's Charlie Winegardner.
The Gardner-Webb men's golf team will return to play tomorrow morning, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will tee-off at approximately 8 a.m. on day two of the conference championship tournament.
