BOILING
SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb strong safety Chris James was granted an
extension of eligibility waiver by the Big South Conference and
NCAA earlier this week, and will play his final season with the
Runnin' Bulldogs in 2012.
James
(Newnan, Ga. / Sandy Creek HS) missed the entire 2011 season, all
but one game in 2010 and the entire 2008 season with injuries.
"Chris
has been a tremendous leader for us, despite some injuries that
delayed his career, and we are thrilled for his opportunity to play
again," said head coach Ron Dickerson, Jr. "He has gone through
hours of excruciating rehab to regain his health and is looking
forward to helping us on the field in 2012. He is in the best shape
of his career right now, and will help us a great deal."
The
5-foot-11, 220-pounder saw extensive action in 2009 as a redshirt
sophomore, starting nine games and finishing with 28 total tackles,
two interceptions and a pass break up. He played in the season
finale vs. VMI in 2010, making five stops and picking off a pass in
the end zone. As a true freshman in 2007, he played in 10 games,
made one start and finished with 26 total tackles (17 solo) and a
tackle for loss.
James
has collected 59 total tackles and made three interceptions during
his career with the Runnin' Bulldogs. He starred at Sandy Creek
(Ga.) High on the high school level, earning All-Area honors as a
senior.
James
graduated with a degree in Sociology in May, 2011, and is currently
pursuing a master's degree at Gardner-Webb.
Gardner-Webb opens its 2012 season at home vs. Wofford College on
Saturday, September 1 at 6:00 pm.
