GWU Women's Golf in Third-Place After Day One of the Big South Women's Golf Championship

Ninety Six, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's golf team finished day one of the 2012 Big South Women's Golf Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting in third-place overall in the team standings with a first round team score of 307, +19.
Gardner-Webb is 13 strokes behind the first round leader in Campbell (294, +6) and nine shots behind Coastal Carolina (298, +10) who is in second-place. However, the Runnin' Bulldogs are only three strokes ahead of Radford who sits in fourth-place at 310, +22.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were paced by juniors Meghan Allum and Sammy Vass on day one, as each carded a first round 76, +4, good enough to put them both in a tie at 10th-place overall. Allum shot a first round 37 and a second round 39 en route to her first round 76, +4, while Vass turned in three birdies and a score of 35, -1 under par, on the back nine for her first round score.
Right on their heels was junior Hannah Hellyer and senior Courtney Finocchiaro, who posted rounds of 77, +5, and 78, +6, respectively. Hellyer, who is in a tie at 15th-place, turned in one birdie on the front nine, while Finocchiaro, who is tied for 18th-place overall, birdied hole number 18 on her way to her first round 78, +6.
Junior Lauren Smith rounded out the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as she bounced back from a front nine score of 45, +9, to shoot an even par 36 on the back nine to finish the day at 81, +9, and in a tied at 32nd-place.
Gardner-Webb will return for day two of competition tomorrow morning, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will tee off at 10:20 a.m.
