
GWU Women's Soccer To Host Charleston Southern Thursday, Coastal Carolina Saturday in First Week of Big South Play

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's women's soccer team will have its season transition into conference play this week following a seven match non-conference slate to begin the 2012 season.
GWU (1-6) will open Big South play with a home match versus Charleston Southern on Thursday, September 20. The match between the Runnin' Buldogs and the Buccaneers is set for a 6:00 p.m. start time.
Charleston Southern (2-4-1) and GWU share two common opponents thus far in 2012 in USC Upstate and Georgia Southern. CSU won its road matchup with the Spartans 2-1 and fought to a 1-1 tie at home with the Eagles. GWU won 3-0 at USC Upstate and dropped a 3-0 decision at Georgia Southern.
The Lady Bucs have knocked home eight goals thus far on the season, led by the efficient offensive play of Toni Lashley, who has scored three goals on ten shots this season. CSU keeper Caitlin Cody surrenders 1.83 goals/game on average and is the top tier of the conference in saves with 53.
Gardner-Webb turns around on Saturday, September 22 to face Coastal Carolina in a match scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. GWU won its meeting with the Chanticleers (3-4) 1-0 last season.
The work of the Coastal Carolina defense has been significant thus far in 2012, as the Chanticleers have pitched three shutouts behind keeper Megan Spencer and her 1.01 goals against average. GWU will look for strong forward play from freshmen Shelby Hooe (2 goals scored in 2012) and Nichole Poppe (1 goal) CCU is led offensively by sophomore midfielder Kacey Kelley's three goals scored this season.
