GWU Women's Basketball Begins Practice for the 2012-13 Season
September 30, 2012 | Women's Basketball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team rolled out the basketballs for its first official team practice on Sunday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.
Head Coach Rick Reeves, who is entering his 28th year overall in intercollegiate athletes and ninth at the helm of the Runnin' Bulldogs' women's basketball program, is excited to begin full-team practices just a little over a month before GWU's season opener at home versus Lipscomb on November 9th.
"I have been waiting for this practice since the last practice of last year," Reeves commented. "We are excited about this season and getting to work."
Gardner-Webb, who had only two seniors on last year's squad, will be even younger this season, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will be led by a trio of juniors in Catrina Green, Jasmine Dale and Tabby Koerner.
Joining the three juniors are second-year players in Jessica Heilig, Mayhana Dunovant and Chariah Harris and a total of eight newcomers, all of which are true freshmen.
Not only is it a tough task at hand for the Runnin' Bulldogs once more with a slew of newcomers and a very young team from top to bottom, but Coach Reeves will be working with a new staff in first-year Associate Head Coach Dean Walsh and first-year Assistant Coaches Dominique Hudson and Blake DuDonis.
"I have a great working relationship and friendship with Coach Walsh and mine and his philosophies work well together," continued Reeves. "Also Dom and Blake have both been with the program for years when they were students here. Dom was the coach on the floor for me for four-years when she played her and probably knows our system better than me. Blake worked with our program for three-or-four years when he was a student here at GWU and knows how we work and our expectations."
The Runnin' Bulldogs, whose first practice was for three hours on Sunday afternoon, are slated to hold over 30 practices overall over the next six weeks prior to GWU's season opener at home versus Lipscomb on November 9th.
