Woeful Shooting Dooms Gardner-Webb in 64-42 Road Loss to High Point

High Point, N.C. - In what was the Runnin' Bulldogs worst shooting performance of the season, as Gardner-Webb shot a season-low 22.8 percent (13-of-57) from the floor overall for the game, the High Point Panthers took advantage to lead for most of the contest in the 64-42 conference win over GWU on Saturday afternoon in the Millis Center in High Point, N.C.

The loss drops GWU to 7-7 overall and 0-3 in the Big South, while High Point moves to 9-6 and 3-1 in conference play with the win.

While the 22.8 percent was the lowest shooting percentage for GWU in a game this season, the 42 points scored also ranks as a season low this year.

GWU junior guard Jasmine Dale, who has now made a three-pointer in seven straight games, poured in a team-high 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from behind the arc, while freshman guard Doreen Richardson hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with a career-high eight points in the loss.

High Point junior center Cheyenne Parker posted her 12th double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points and 16 rebounds, while guards Lindsay Puckett and Kendra Wallace each chipped in 15 points apiece for the Panthers in the win.

High Point's height bothered the Runnin' Bulldogs all game long, as the Panthers, which forced GWU into 26 turnovers for the game, registered 13 blocks and 17 steals behind Parker's seven blocks and six steals.

The Runnin' Bulldogs took an early lead at 2-0 to start the game, as center Catrina Green hit a layup on the right block, yet went ice cold from the floor over the next nine minutes of play, going 1-of-11 during that span to fall behind to the Panthers 15-6 with 11:38 to go in the first half.

GWU's shooting woes continued over the rest of the opening half, as the Runnin' Bulldogs would go over six minutes in the first half without a field goal, which High Point took full advantage of by way of a 13-1 scoring run over that span, until a driving layup by Richardson at the 8:50 mark ended the drought and put the score at 22-9 in favor of the home team.

The Runnin' Bulldogs, who finished the first half 6-of-31 (19.4 percent) shooting, again hit another scoring lull as High Point's Wallace poured in eight points to help lead the Panthers to a 39-18 halftime lead.

High Point, who was led by Parker's 12 points and 13 rebounds, outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs' 18-6 in points in the paint and 14-2 in points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play to build the double digit lead.

The Runnin' Bulldogs' offense showed some life to start the second half, as GWU came out of the break on a 6-0 run, catching the Panthers off guard and putting the score at 39-24 with 19:11 to go in regulation.

However, the Panthers answered with an 8-0 run of its own over the next three minutes of the contest to extend its lead back out to 23 at 47-24 on a layup by Parker with 17:40 on the clock.

Gardner-Webb cut the High Point lead to 18 at 49-31 on a steal and fast break layup by Richardson at the 13:20 mark, yet failed to get any closer for the remainder of the contest before the final horn sounded with High Point on top 64-42.

High Point outscored GWU 32-16 in points in the paint and 25-12 in points off turnovers for the game, while also out-rebounding the Runnin' Bulldogs 51-45.

The loss is the Runnin' Bulldogs' third straight to the Panthers after GWU won six straight from 2008-11.

Gardner-Webb (7-7, 0-3 Big South) will tip-off a three-game home stand on Monday night, January 7th, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host Campbell at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena. High Point (9-6, 3-1 Big South) will open up a three-game road trip on Thursday night, January 10th, at 7 p.m. in Conway, S.C.
