GWU's Yelverton Earns a Top-15 Finish as the 'Dogs Take 11th Overall at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate

Morganton, N.C. - Gardner-Webb junior golf Matt Yelverton posted a top-15 finish, as the Runnin' Bulldogs finished in 11th-place overall at the par 70, 6,718-yards, Donald Ross Intercollegiate hosted by Appalachian State University at the Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club in Morganton, N.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs posted rounds of 293, 292 and 284 to finish with a three-round combined team score of 869, +29, to finish in 11th-place overall in the team standings ahead of Samford and Bucknell.
Yelverton paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with rounds of 71, 69 and 69 to finish in a tie for 13th-place overall with a 54-hole score of 209, -1 under par. The junior was the lone GWU golfer to post an eagle at the event, while he posted a 4.17, -5 under par, par-5 scoring average and an even 4.00 par-4 scoring average over the three rounds of play. Yelverton also turned in nine birdies over his 54-holes of play.
Following his first-place showing in GWU's last event one week ago, Blake Maum carded rounds of 75, 71 and 71 to finish in a tie for 37th-place overall with his combined score of 217, +7. Maum registered a team-high 10 birdies on the two-day event and led GWU with a par-3 scoring average of 2.92, -1 under par.
Fellow freshman Vincent Blanchette shot rounds of 72, 74 and 73 to finish in a tie for 46th-place overall with his combined score of 219, +9, while redshirt-senior Daley Byles turned in a score of 224, +14, with his rounds of 75, 78 and 71 to finish in a tie at 57th-place overall. Blanchette recorded a par-5 scoring average of 4.33, -4 under par, for the three-round event, while Byles tied Maum with a team-high 10 birdies overall.
Rounding out the lineup for Gardner-Webb was sophomore Elki Kow who carded rounds of 82, 79 and 73 to place in 76th-place overall with his 54-hole score of 234, +24.
Playing as individuals at the event, Clement Kurniawan carded nine birdies and 35 pars to finish in a tie for 26th-place overall with rounds of 71, 72 and 70 for a 54-hole score of 213, +3, while senior Steven Jones turned in rounds of 79, 69 and 75 to place in a tie at 54th-place overall with his three-round combined score of 223, +13.
Wofford College won the team championship, as the Terriers carded a team score of 824, -16 under par, to finish two strokes ahead of the second-place finishers in the Davidson College Wildcats who finished with a team score of 826, -14 under par.
Both Ryan Fricker of Bethune-Cookman and George Perkovich of Wofford finished tied atop of the individual leaderboard, as each posted three sub-par rounds to finish the 54-hole event tied for first-place overall with a combined score of 202, -8 under par.
The Gardner-Webb men's golf team will gear up for its final tournament of the 2013 fall season, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate on November 3-5th hosted by Western Carolina at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Cashiers, N.C.
