
Runnin' Bulldogs Pick Up Four Singles Wins at ITA Regional Event

Cary, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's men's tennis team competed at the prestigious ITA Regionals tournament, sending Benjamin Kaszás, Brendan Dempsey, Nikita Zverkov, and Ernest Alberch to the event, competing October 17-18 in Cary, N.C.
Gardner-Webb totaled four singles wins at the tournament, getting one win from each of the student-athletes participating at ITA Regionals.
Kaszás, a sophomore from Budapest, Hungary, picked up a big win in the consolation bracket against ECU's Nicholas Soriano, saving three straight match points in the final tiebreak to win by a 2-6, 6-3, 8-6 margin. Kaszás dropped his opening match to seed (17-24) Fernando Guillen of Campbell.
Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) also fell in his opening match, dropping a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 decision versus Elon's Jordan Kaufman, but rebounded to win his consolation match. The junior took that match by defeating Central's Tamina Kienka 6-2, 6-2.
Zverkov, a sophomore from Moscow, Russia, prevailed in his opening round match, knocking off UNC's Maik Ulrich 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Zverkov's win earned him a matchup with N.C. State's Austin Powell (9), who took a 6-1, 6-2 win for the Wolfpack in round two.
Alberch (Torello, Spain) won versus ECU's Colin Roller in the opening round, outlasting the Pirates' player 6-4, 6-4 to start the tournament. The junior dropped a tough second round matchup versus UNC Wilmington's Christian Van Der Burgh, who prevailed 7-5, 6-3.
Gardner-Webb hosts an Alumni Match Saturday, October 26, and competes at the Winthrop Fall Tournament, held November 1-3 in Rock Hill, S.C.
