October 21, 2013 | Men's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to continue to add to its current two-match winning streak this week, as the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team will host UNC Asheville for Senior Night on Wednesday night, before hitting the road to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels on Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.
Gardner-Webb will host its 2013 Senior Night on Wednesday night, October 23rd, as the Runnin' Bulldogs welcome the UNC Asheville Bulldogs to town for a 7 p.m. conference match up at Greene-Harbison Field.
GWU will then hit the road for the final time in the 2013 regular season to take on the Fighting Camels on Saturday afternoon, October 26th, at 1 p.m. in Buies Creek, N.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs improved to 6-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in Big South play with back-to-back road wins last week at Presbyterian and at VMI, as not only did the GWU outscore its two foes 8-2 over the week, but also outshot its opponents 39-20 over the two match stretch.
The two victories snapped a five-match winless streak (0-4-1) and pushed the Runnin' Bulldogs back to .500 on the season in Big South Conference play.
Gardner-Webb's six goals in the 6-1 win over PC was the most that a GWU team had scored in a single match since the Runnin' Bulldogs scored six goals in a 6-2 win over East Carolina in the season opener in 2005.
Both Ali Al-Gashamy and Denzel Clarke each posted at least one goal in each of the Runnin' Bulldogs' two contests last week with Al-Gashamy totaling two goals, while Clarke, who was named the Choice Hotels Big South Player of the Week, recorded four goals overall.
Clarke's four goals on the week pushed him out to 12 on the season, which not only leads the Big South and the nation, but also set a new GWU Division I single season record for the most goals by a single player in one season, surpassing the previous record of 11 set in 2007, 2005 and 2001.
The Bulldogs of UNC Asheville are 4-9-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the Big South this season. Asheville, who is 1-4 in true road matches this season, have loss six of its last seven matches with the lone win coming at home over Presbyterian, 2-0, on October 9th.
The Bulldogs have been outscored 24-12 so far this season, including 16-8 in the second half of play.
Asheville is led by the duo of Bobby Castro and Emil Gonsalvez who have three goals apiece on the year.
The Fighting Camels of Campbell University enter play this week at 3-6-3 overall and 3-0-1 in Big South play. Campbell, who will host Longwood on Wednesday night, is 1-3-2 overall at home this season.
The Fighting Camels, who will be hosting its Homecoming this Saturday, are led by Justin Franz and his team-high four goals and three assists, while Ricki Gaez has recorded two goals and three assists on the year.
