Kansas City, Kan. - Gardner-Webb forward Denzel
Clarke received national recognition for his exceptional
performance last week as he was named as the Disney Soccer/NSCAA
Player of the Week for the Division I Men's Soccer category by the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for matches
played from Oct. 14 through Oct. 20.
Clarke added to his team-high goals total this week with four
goals over GWU's two matches, both of which came in Big South
Conference play. Clarke helped to lead GWU to a 2-0 week, as he
posted a hat trick, his second of the season, in a 6-1 road win at
Presbyterian. He followed that performance up with the game-winning
goal in the 74th minute in the 2-1 road win at VMI on Saturday.
The junior's 12 goals not only lead the Big South Conference,
but also is a new GWU Division I record for the most goals scored
by a single player in a single season since GWU moved to the NCAA
Division I level in 2000-01.
In fact, Clarke has scored a total of seven goals over GWU's
last five matches, posting at least one goal in each contest over
the span.
He also is tied for the national lead in goals with 12 on the
season.
The Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week are announced every
Tuesday throughout the fall college season during the College
Highlights and Rankings Show on NSCAATV.com. The program was
expanded to include a men's and women's winner from all three NCAA
divisions in 2013.
