
Gardner-Webb Sweeps Big South Conference Men's Soccer Weekly Awards

Charlotte, N.C. - Gardner-Webb midfielder Ali Al-Gashamy has been tabbed the Choice Hotels Big South Men's Soccer Attacking Player of the Week, while Runnin' Bulldogs' goalkeeper Matthew Swan was named the Big South Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played Oct. 21-27, the League announced today.
Al-Gashamy, a sophomore from Kristiansand, Norway, notched a pair of goals and two assists to push Gardner-Webb to a pair of Big South wins last week. He got his week going with two assists and a goal in GWU's 5-0 win over UNC Asheville on Oct. 23. Three days later at Campbell, he added the insurance goal in the 87th minute to give GWU the 2-0 win. For his efforts he was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. The honor is his first Big South Attacking Player of the Week selection this season.
Swan, a freshman from Newport South, Wales, posted back-to-back shutout wins in Big South Conference play last week. He faced 23 shots overall on the week, seven of which were on goal, and recorded six total saves. The honor marks his first Big South Defensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Both Al-Gashamy and Swan join fellow teammate Denzel Clarke as Runnin' Bulldogs' to earn Big South Conference weekly honors this season, as Clarke was twice named the Big South Attacking Player of the Week on September 3rd and October 21st.
