October 29, 2013 | Men's Soccer
Kansas City, Kan. - Gardner-Webb midfielder Ali Al-Gashamy received national recognition for his exceptional performance last week as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) named him as the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week for the Division I Men's Soccer category for matches played from Oct. 21 through Oct. 27.
GWU's Al-Gashamy helped to extend the Runnin' Bulldogs' current winning streak to four straight matches, all of which have come in Big South Conference play, as he totaled six points on two goals and two assists on the week.
In GWU's 5-0 rout of UNC Asheville at home on Wednesday night, the sophomore picked up an assist on the home team's second goal of the match in the 16th minute and then added a second assist on the Runnin' Bulldogs' fourth goal of the match in the 59th minute. He then concluded his superb performance with an unassisted goal on a chip shot over the head of the Asheville goalkeeper in the 62nd minute to end the scoring for the match. On Saturday afternoon, Al-Gashamy tallied a goal in the 88th minute to secure the 2-0 road win over the Fighting Camels of Campbell in Big South Conference play.
Overall, Al-Gashamy had a part in four of GWU's seven goals on the week and has accounted for a goal in each of the Runnin' Bulldogs' last four matches, all of which were wins.
Al-Gashamy becomes the second Runnin' Bulldog in consecutive weeks to earn the national weekly honor following fellow teammate Denzel Clarke's recognition last week.
The Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week are announced every Tuesday throughout the fall college season during the College Highlights and Rankings Show on NSCAATV.com. The program was expanded to include a men's and women's winner from all three NCAA divisions in 2013.
