Gardner-Webb Women's Soccer to Play at VMI on Wednesday, at Home Versus Longwood on Saturday

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's women's soccer team will continue its run in the heart of Big South play this week, traveling to face VMI on Wednesday evening prior to returning home for a match versus Longwood on Saturday at Greene-Harbison Field.
GWU (3-8-1) will look to carry the momentum from a 1-0 road win over Campbell into its matches this week. The road triumph, the Runnin' Bulldogs first of the season, also marked Gardner-Webb's first win over Campbell as Big South counterparts.
GWU will look to build on its first Big South win of the season when it takes on VMI (2-9, 0-4 Big South) on Wednesday. Offensively, the Keydets are averaging .55 goals/match while allowing 2.64 goals/match on the defensive end. VMI is led in scoring by Kristen Whitehurst and Sydnie Bligh, who have netted two goals a apiece this season.
On Saturday, GWU faces a difficult test against Longwood (4-6-2, 3-1 Big South), a team that makes creating offense a challenge with consistent play from its defense. The Lancers have posted five shutouts this season, including a road contest against the Big South's highest scoring offense in Winthrop.
Gardner-Webb will look to stay hot after its 1-0 win at Campbell, a match in which the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to capitalize on an early goal by Samantha Gutierrez (7th minute) and hold on to the lead by keeping the opposition off the scoreboard the rest of the half. A diverse GWU offense that has seen seven different players register a goal this season (including Shelby Hooe, whose five goals and four assists lead the team) will be counted on to help an opportunistic Runnin' Bulldog defense that did not allow a shot on goal during the second half against Campbell.
Gardner-Webb's match against VMI on Wednesday, October 9 in Lexington, Va. is scheduled to begin a 4:00 p.m. The Runnin' Bulldogs' home contests versus Longwood on Saturday, October 12 is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
